The idea behind buying a government is that it nets more money than not buying a government.
Like most business actions, if it is doable at a profitable price point, it will be done.
The current Republican Party is a very efficient, cost-effective government buying project. The Republicans will give business absolutely ANYTHING in exchange for them holding power. The religious nuts and relict Klansman demand nothing from business in exchange for their support, other than policy. And most of the operation is on the state and local level.
As demographics shift, the "How working class racism becomes a corporate welfare state" story will work less well. The savings involved in business partnering with insane ideologues who don't expect to share the money will run out. The Republican base will be able to win fewer and fewer elections.
And then what?
Easy. Business will be (even more) aggressive with the Democratic Party. There is value in buying a government. It's not like that value would disappear if we became a de facto one party society.
There would be well-funded "sensible, pro-business" democratic primary challengers to anyone who did not toe the line, for instance.
If the Republican Party goes out of business tomorrow the government will not magically revert to ordinary people.
The government will still be a thing worth buying... if doing so nets more money than not buying a government
Fortunately, or unfortunately, if the Republican Party collapsed in size the cost of buying government would go up because business would be competing more with real people seeking benefits. I think the current scam is very efficient. And with a lower net "profit" the enterprise of buying government will be less attractive, which might help.
But in any event, the business game is a bottom-line game. When push comes to shove they really won't care what letter someone has after their name.
