Bill Maher On The Pope
MAHER: This week, Illinois became the 16th, I think, and Hawaii the 15th state to allow gay marriage. [Applause] Seems like they’re dropping at an alarming rate to conservatives. But I noticed in Hawaii, where I always go to perform on New Year's Eve and New Year's night, that it was not as easy as they thought it would be. We think of Hawaii as a laid-back place, but their Catholic bishop, I think his name is Bishop Silva, said something about how children who are, you know, adopted by gay parents have a greater chance of committing suicide, that's bullshit, right?
(DAN) SAVAGE: That’s total bullshit. He’s confusing children of gay parents with children who are raped by Catholic priests. [Whoops, laughter, applause] Sorry. I am just done being lectured about children and their safety by Catholic-fucking bishops, priests, cardinals, The pope himself has let it go. ON JESUS
Jesus is great — is there a better role model? No. It's religion, it's the people who get in between — the bureaucracy, you know. ... It's the way people abuse Jesus. Was there ever a greater victim of name dropping?
I love Jesus. I just don’t like the Christians who don’t believe in what he says.
Jesus, as a philosopher is wonderful. There's no greater role model, in my view, than Jesus Christ.
