Shelter Dog Adopts 8 Abandoned Puppies

http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/hoE1aMX_FYNe3fUDJcnLjA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/

After having two puppies of her own via C-section at a Canadian animal shelter, German Shepherd Timber's maternal instinct was in full swing - and she decided to make eight more young puppies at the shelter her own.

The orphaned pups were about one week old when they were found in a box at a park, just three days before Timber's own pups were born. The staff at the Langley Animal Protection Society had been bottle-feeding the puppies around the clock, but when Timber's litter was born on Dec. 6, her veterinarian said the puppies could be introduced to the new mom to see if she'd accept them.

Timber took in the pups, who are believed to be a Pit Bull mix, and is nursing all 10 of the puppies. She's a "very doting mom," the shelter says on its blog. - Read it at the Huffington Post Canada and watch the puppies on a live stream

Three cheers for Timber!

a foster kitten cam associated with the same shelter. The latest litter had their own amazing story - 10 feral kittens who, when rescued, were malnourished and afflicted with ring worm, round worm, and an assortment of other parasites and ailments. They've been given an amazing amount of care by their foster human and medical treatment by their vet, and all but one has been spayed/neutered, and they've started to go to their adoptive homes. (The one who's still not neutered is recovering from pneumonia, and they're waiting until his lungs are cleared.)

Their vet is amazing as well, donating services and even making house calls to make sure all these babies survive and thrive.

There are only a couple days left in the competition, but if you want to vote for LAPS in a shelter challenge sponsored by the Animal Rescue Site and the Pet Finder Foundation, you can go here

http://tinykittens.com/vote

and vote for them to receive a financial award. One vote per person per day.

The momma dog is awesome, of course, but my thoughts go immediately to the person that abandoned 8 puppies in a box at a park. Who does this? My guess is always - a young male.

1. Why did they abandon them? Because they weren't 100% pitbull?
2. Why do they have an unfixed dog? Because they're too cheap or too lazy to fix it? Because they want to make money off puppies?
3. Where is the empathy for defenseless puppies? Why not take them TO THE POUND YOURSELF?

If you intend to kill them, you lazy, heartless, cruel bastard, then kill them. Don't chicken out and leave it to the elements.

Mean people come in all sexes, colors, religions, hair colors, eye colors, heights, weights, and languages. Same for nice folks.

Am I the only person on DU who happens to love the men in her life, and think they're awesome? Maybe I'm just "lucky" ? I don't think that's the case.

For all the harm young males can do, I've seen young females just as vicious as any living creature could be. And the opposite is true: I've seen both sexes be heroes and saints.

Anyone who would leave a box of puppies in a park is either cruel, misguided, or a kid who knew mean people were going to kill the pups so they didn't have to feed 'em....or some such. There are a thousand possible scenarios. No bus fare to make it to the shelter?

It's a hard world out there. Not everyone is a monster.

Young males are the perpetrators of most violence in society. That's simply fact. There's a reason they're used as cannon fodder by the governments of the world, and that prisons hold more men than women.

All your other scenarios are possible, I just think they're less likely than this being a young male. And no one is "guilty without trial" - I said it was a GUESS.

There aren't a 1000 possible scenarios that explain this. There are maybe 10.

10. 7 dogs are born every year for every human born in the US
Fri Dec 20, 2013, 05:55 PM

less than 14% of americans own a dog (directly -- for households, joint ownership, the percentage is 36.5%).

That means for every person who is willing to take on the expenses and commitment of sharing your life with a companion animal dog, there are 49 dogs born.

It is a crying shame. Millions of dogs put down by the needle because we refuse to deal effectively with this issue as a community. Canada puts down 5 mil a year, the USA about 50 million dog every year.

The problem isn't "young males" or what breed the puppies are or aren't. It is something much much bigger than that.

There is so much ignorance about spaying and neutering pets, but I'm hopeful with all the animal organizations trying to get the word out, that will change a little. Yet, the old livestock way of treating animals as if they need to breed in order to be healthy, or guys not wanting to emasculate their buds, or people thinking they are hurting their pets persists quite a bit. It is rather expensive as well so if a person is reluctant they just blow it off. They just don't care enough that millions of beautiful dogs and cats are euthanized each year. And it's such a simple procedure, especially for males who are usually up and about the same day as if nothing every happened.
