(20,277 posts)you can sing! That would make me happy as hell - well okay, happier. I'll bet it's not that crappy 'auto-tune' singing either. You probably make people smile or move them to tears. I think that's pretty damn cool.

(23,761 posts)since I was 11. By the time I was 12 I was singing in 8 different languages (I mean really singing) not trying to grasp the language. I sang Bach, Beethoven, Handle, Brahms, Mozart all the masters. I didn't listen to the radio til I was in college because I thought it was trite. That part I am lucky at, however every time I go to a party or some other gathering I have to sing, every wedding, baptism, funeral I have to sing for FREE. Christmas also doesn't appeal to me because of all the extra "social" work and expense and also the way people get crazed at this time of the year.

(8,646 posts)I have some musical talent and can pick up an instrument and sound out songs. I played oboe in band. I taught myself some guitar. I played piano for 4 years as a teen (I had to BEG my parents for years to put me in it - it was finally a friend's mom who told my parents I was sounding out songs on their piano and I was talented and should have the chance to play....) and skipped several 'grades' and passed all my exams with flying colors...so I do have musical talent....but I cannot make my voice do what I want to hear.
It really bothers me too when people say people who can't sing are tone deaf. I'm not. I can hear every shitty note coming out of my mouth and just how out of tune it is. When I was in piano, I drove my mother crazy constantly getting the tuner to stop by because I wasn't satisfied with the sound...I'm telling you I can hear my terrible voice. I just want a vocal chord transplant! LOL!

(23,761 posts)I was in an international boy choir out of Rome when I was child. For a year we sang all over the world. About 15 years ago, I went in to a Fred Meyer (Kroger) Store and I heard over the intercom system playing a CD in which when I was child we made a record, which they latter turned into a CD. Blew me away.

(450 posts)It doesn't have to be a commercialized holiday. Or a religious holiday. My family is of all kind of different religions and atheists so we just have a huge dinner on Christmas eve then each family celebrates or not Christmas day.
I do enjoy the one week off I receive during the year.

(41,694 posts)REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
I'd like a jury to decide the appropriateness of this OP. I believe it IS disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate but want a jury to make the decision. I can live with whatever it decides about the public face of DU and what DU stands for.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Dec 20, 2013, 08:27 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Seriously? What is the issue here? Good LAWD!! Alerter... get a clue! UGH!
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: DU is often a venting outlet. What's the harm?
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Vote to let it stay. I understand the alerter's concern. But an OP like this will probably disappear quickly. If it does not, it will become a thread filled with rich humor and discussion, and THAT is the public face of DU. OK with this juror.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I think it's fine. No different than saying "Fuck Labrador Retrievers", "Fuck salami" or "Fuck rubber bands"
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: And a Bah, humbug to the alerter

(13,485 posts)I dare you or anyone to read Charles Dickens Christmas Carol... the book. But before that, read a synopsis or biography of Charles Dickens life. It gives Christmas a realistic meaning in this day and age. It ain't the fun movies we are used to and in context of his life, it's a tragic story of the whole of humankind. It's no religious tale and the only reference to "Christ" in it is the holiday's name and that's one of the ironies. It is a masterpiece for anyone who wants to find meaning in a ridiculous invention called Christmas and give it a purposeful and humanistic reality. It is as true today as it was when it was written.

(13,570 posts)This is a needlessly nasty post, an insult to the Christians on this board, and an insult to yourself. Would you also say "Fuck Solstice" or "Fuck Hanukkah" or "Fuck Valentine's Day" or "Fuck New Year's Day"?
You have stooped to a very, very low level with this. And I am not even a Christian. In fact, I am a non-theist, though I celebrate the secular parts of this SEASON of light and love.
I think you should retract this and apologize.
My suggestion is that you go take something, hopefully something natural, that will improve your nasty and obtuse and rude state of mind. Maybe you should seek some help. Just because you are in a bad mood about it doesn't mean you should be so insulting and uncaring of others' feelings. You should go vent elsewhere.

(22,000 posts)and I'll tell you I don't miss the whole consumerist mess it has turned into. The only Christmas I've been home was 2004 (the end of my first year abroad). Christmas isn't a big holiday here and grocery stores are open, most everything else is closed.
We will be buying a small turkey breast at Costco and having that with mashed potatoes and gravy. The only things we really buy at Costco is food, but thank goodness we have that. I miss having someone of a semblance of Christmas dinner.

(20,411 posts)many others celebrate with a day off, perhaps a bonus, or a slow-down in work courtesy of their employer at Christmas.
It is the employer at fault for this OPer's hate, not the holiday.
As I stated, Christmas is a wonderful time for those who enjoy celebrating their generosity with friends and family.
Then again, perhaps some just like to hate.

that same post where he complained about have too much work, he added "plus, it's expensive". Face it, this guy just does not like to share his fortune. Did he not also complain about Valentine's Day in a subsequent post? - upset over having to buy his wife a gift?

on double-edit
in a yet later post - "Christmas also doesn't appeal to me because of all the extra "social" work and expense and also the way people get crazed at this time of the year."
the OPer does not like to socialize with friends and family. Does not like to spend money. Does not like the joy it brings to others.
the OPer also blames the extra work on "singing", in addition to his/her work - apparently in great demand around the holiday season due to an ability to sing in many languages and perform the masters - "I sang Bach, Beethoven, Handle, Brahms, Mozart all the masters".
So the OPer hates Christmas because of the extra money he/she is "obligated" to chase.

Having been paid to sing all over the world and especially having my talents in such high demand this time of year is a real drag. You can't imagine how awful it is to have people actually stand up and applaud your work at the end of the day. I'd give anything to be just like the rest of you who slog through the year with your nose to the grindstone. Pity poor me. And while you're at it, fuck Christmas."
