Pix of two male piliated woodpeckers fighting over territory (added video of fighting & mom feeding)

Edit: Reply # 21 has the added videos.

Here are a few of the photos Marta took about an hour ago. These are two males fighting over territory. In one photo a squirrel that thought they were playing tries to join in the fun.

I've had far too many photos stolen from our website and posted elsewhere under another name. I have to put the watermark in my photos now to stop that; I really wish I could trust everyone, because I don't like the watermarks either.

I was wondering about that yesterday -- am selling an historic image on ebay currently.

You can do it with Photoshop, though that is fairly labor intensive. I finally did a search for watermarking software because Photoshop just wasn't doing it for me, and found uMark. They have a good product for a decent price. It's what I use for everything now.

I have tried almost all the watermarking tools out there. Many has a free version but it is highly limited in functionality you have to pay to unlock all features. Also don't go for online watermarking tools, such a waste of time uploading and downloading, and functionality limited.
In my opinion the most efficient and easy to use is one called "Mass Watermark".it can watermak, resize, add exif etc etc to images in bulk.Take a look here http://www.masswatermark.com Not free though $30

Though I notice the watermark, I can still see the picture well.

Good choice on watermark software.

Marta just got so tired of seeing her photos with somebody else using it as their work.

I used to see them occasionally up in Washington, and it was a rare treat. A month ago I saw one here in N. Central Arizona, and because of your post a researched their range, and found out that this is not part of the range, so I'm going to report it to the AZ Dept of Game and Fish on Monday.

The first pileated was spotted in Fontenelle Forest in the late 90's. The forest is on the other side of our back fence. We saw our first a few months after we moved (Nov 06) here. There are more in the area now, so they must be happy in the area. Lots of dead trees they require for nesting.

They are very shy. Ours stay all year.

Do they ever come into physical contact, or is it just displays, menacing calls, etc.?

These videos are not a mating ritual. In both it is two males just like we had yesterday. Females have a black forehead and no red stripe on the face that looks like a mustache on males..

Feeding time. Note mom has a black forehead and no red stripe on her face:

The male was digging a hole in the ground around a stump and the female was waiting around not doing any of the work. When the male would come up with a juicy grub, he would give it to the waiting female - but only about half of them.

We're lucky to have them around here consistently.
