NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Thousands of pages of documents from the Newtown shooting investigation help fill out the picture of the gunman's mother as a dedicated and loving, if bewildered, parent who acknowledged her son appeared to be spiraling downward but was not aware to what extent.
Nancy Lanza told a lifelong friend about two weeks before the massacre that her 20-year-old son, who lived with her, was becoming increasingly despondent. Adam Lanza hadn't left his room in three months and was communicating with her only via email. When Hurricane Sandy blew through Connecticut in late October and cut power to the Lanza home, the documents say, it "put Adam over the edge." She couldn't persuade him to stay at a hotel or in an RV.
When Nancy Lanza asked her son whether he would feel bad if something happened to her, he replied no, she told her friend, who was not identified in the documents. Still, "Nancy never expressed any concern about fearing for her safety while alone with Adam," the report said.
About two weeks later, Adam fatally shot his mother in the head while she was in bed, gunned down 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in one of the worst mass shootings in the nation's history, and killed himself with a handgun as police closed in.

(102,292 posts)But every time I see this photo, I can scarcely hold back my rage--at him, his mother (and the father who freely abandoned him to go on and create his new, more perfect family.
I can not even imagine being a Newtown parent and trying to get past this...

Don't know how any parent lives with that.
Just imagine them seeing that, now, a year after burying their own babies.

(12,647 posts)Mom had quite a healthy arsenal. Add her feeding violence and death to her mentally challenged son, what could possibly go wrong? I'm assuming the pic of the baby draped in bullets and sucking on a gun is Lanza? If so, then perhaps our gaze should also focus on dad? The parents had total control over what Lanza was exposed to. Why did they allow mass murder and violence to dominate his environment, starting at a very early age? Why couldn't anyone see this recipe for disaster? Especially Lanza's doctors.

(8,554 posts)Actually, I'm assuming a lot, after viewing all of those pics, and yes, I hold both of the parents of such an individual more to blame than is probably civil. Just from the bits of the report I've seen, it seems that Lanza was allowed to slip further and further away from any constructive help, the older he grew, despite indications that the opposite was needed. That white teddy bear resting atop the gun safe actually brought me to tears...all of the pristine white decor of the Lanza home, carefully positioned, stylish treasures throughout, whilst the son hunkered down in his blackened room.
That Lanza arsenal claimed 27 lives last December 14 and I can only hope that the ones who were aware of the warning signs will suffer the guilt of that knowledge for the rest of their lives.
