The Bureau of Motor Vehicles has rescinded the specialty license plates for the Indiana Youth Group, as well as the Greenways Foundation and the Indiana 4-H Foundation, saying the groups violated their contracts by offering low-digit plates in exchange for contributions.
The youth group a support group for gay and lesbian youths was targeted by conservative lawmakers who were upset that the group won a specialty plate. In the final days of the legislature, there were efforts to pass legislation that would strip them of their plate, while also cutting down on the proliferation of specialty plates in general.
When that effort failed, lawmakers, including Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said they had found an alternative solution: Seeking to void the groups contract.
... The BMV, in a statement, said that after senators brought this violation to our attention, the BMV reviewed the websites of all other organizations currently participating in the specialty plate program and decided to remove them from the 4-H and Greenways foundations as well.
