General Discussion

Every self aggrandizing asshole I know is a proud died in the wool Republican.
I can not think of a single Democrat that I know that I would consider even remotely mean. I know a few that might be considered a bit arrogant but not a single one has a mean bone in their body.
Now not every Republican I know is mean(most of them are though) but pretty much every mean person I know is a Republican.

(115,732 posts)But off the top of my head I can't think of any other Democrat I know personally who is just plain mean (though I'm sure there are some, just as I know for a fact there are Democrats who are criminals of various stripes). Most of the true assholes with whom I am personally acquainted are Republicans and/or Teabaggers, though I try to avoid knowing them at all. The nastiest person I know, my SIL, is full-on teabagger.

(7,365 posts)There are plenty of asshole Democrats and plenty of cool Republicans. Once we start with these type of stereotypes, we become the enemy.

(579 posts)many of my work mates were republicans and were some of the nicest people I ever met.
Meanness is not exclusively repub. there are plenty of dems who are just as mean.

(579 posts)but you can have a pleasant personality and still belong to that party just as you can be a complete assholish personality and belong to the dem party.

(17,742 posts)And that is being generous.
If someone is fully aware and educated about what the GOP stands for and votes for and is still considered a "nice' person, then it boggles the mind. It's like someone stabbing you to death while smiling and pretending to care about you. Just can't wrap my head around it.

(13,466 posts)I used to work for a confirmed liberal who was one of the most sneaky, back-biting, underhanded, gossipy people I ever met. She used her liberal talk to sound all kind and accepting until she gained someone's trust then she would use whatever info she gleaned from them against them at the first opportunity.
But I agree that most really nasty people are Republicans. There's something about that angry mindset that can make people unpleasant.

(19,768 posts)Some of the nicest people I've ever known have been repubs (living in SC, I encounter a lot of them), and some of the biggest assholes I've ever dealt with are Democrats.
Generalizations are faulty.

(579 posts)I know just as many mean, low life Democrats as Republicans.

(15,682 posts)But there is a shitload of mean coming from conservative leaders. They are the party of mean. I am suspect of anyone who self identifies with that party.
For quite a while now I have thought that a good ad campaign would be to point out how mean/thoughtless/cold hearted republican leaders are, show examples of them in action (Chris Christie), and ask why anyone would want to be a member of the mean party.

(53,035 posts)Whatever assumptions one has about what it means to be a Democrat do not necessarily hold.
I don't know a lot of Republicans because I live in a very blue city, but I I know one or who are more progressive on a few issues that some who say they are Democrats. One Republican I know isn't right in the head. The rest are perfectly pleasant people.

Living in Portland Oregon I see lots of mean people and although I have no idea on everyone's political affiliation statistically saying a majority of them here are liberal and there are some real jerks here.

(312 posts)I have run into many political zealots who come from many different directions. They were all crazy and would say or do anything to support their position.
The lesson I learned is if you see a zealot do not expect rational thought processes from them. Play nice and get away from them.

(402 posts)The nice Republicans i know have a mean streak that wasn't apparent until i knew them awhile, and i know only one Democrat in my life that's mean. There is a lot of variables, a nice person can also be stupid and just believe bullshit that makes them look a bit evil.
If i had to put a % on it and subtract the people that are mean because they are ignorant i would say 70% of republicans in my life are very cruel even though many can put on a charming appearance, they are very nasty to their loved ones and their stereotypes fill them with a lot of hatred.
Some people i think because of cognitive issues can only empathize with their own family members and themselves, this makes them nasty to people not in their circle but i also think this involves low critical thinking and mathematical skills.
Even if the only thing you care about is yourself its still the smart money to help others.

(11,065 posts)Mean people or otherwise. I doubt a lot of them are even registered to vote. I don't go around quizzing people about their politics but like them or not based on what kind of person they are. How they vote or whether or not they do is no concern of mine, and frankly, not any of my business. People that always want to talk politics with me are people I want to run away from.

(187 posts)Republicans are too liberal in their book.
I have NEVER met one I liked, I cannot stand to be around them and I stopped being nice to them long ago, civil is as far as I will go with them, now if they say or do something ignorant I call them out publically on their BS and make them defend their nonsense.
Back in the day I knew a few of the old Dixicrats who were in the democratic party but they all became Republicans over the years.
