(146,317 posts)It's not asking some supernatural deity to do things, but exhorting everyone to do those things themselves. There is a real difference, IMO.

(146,317 posts)a few times to offer a grace before a meal or to say something at the beginning of a meeting. Instead of a prayer, I always say something similar to what you posted. I don't pray, but I'm always happy to urge people to behave well toward others and to thank those who work hard to produce what we have.

(17,204 posts)Seems to me, exhorting us to do better puts the responsibility on our shoulders, while praying to somebody else removes the responsibility to do anything.
