99% of our country's problems are due to selfishness of all. Most Americans are way more self-centered than they would admit.

Confidence... thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.

(57,936 posts)But not on all issues.
And yes, i noticed how selfish and self-centered some DUers are when they expressed their anger at people who cut in on the freeway. A person who was not selfish and self-centered would probably give a driver who finds himself in the wrong lane on a crowded freeway a little slack and let him merge into traffic.
And my comment is not off topic.
I'm just agreeing with your comment about how "[m]ost Americans are way more self-centered than they would admit." Includes some Americans on DU.

(4,407 posts)I support him generally, and definitely when he's doing good things. When he is pushing the TPP or justifying spying on everybody, then no way. To support him unconditionally would be to elevate him to the status of a deity, where one would simply "have faith" in him. This is not a quality to foster in a democracy.
sheshe2
(83,898 posts)I never said that he was a deity. Nor did I ask if you had faith in him.
I just asked if you support him. You are more than allowed a disclaimer.
Thank you for your post, mindwalker.
mindwalker_i
(4,407 posts)You left that wide open for interpretation. This leaves anyone to fill in the blanks - in fact, for those who answered unequivocally "yes," one could argue that they've signed onto a lot more than perhaps they intended. From your posts, you appear to support Obama a lot, so it's reasonable to make the assumption that when you ask whether someone "supports Obama," you mean for support to be closer to unconditional than what I would agree to.
My feeling is this: no one deserves unconditional support. It's too close to faith, and faith has been used to keep people in line for thousands of years, when they really should get out of line and object to stuff. The same goes for Obama. This whole TPP thing is seriously messed up, and nobody should put themselves in the position of being required to "support Obama" when what he's doing is against their self-interests, or against the interests of the whole country (or 99% of it). In a democracy where, in theory, we are self-governing, it's imperative that people don't give their unconditional support to anyone or any group. To do so is to abandon your responsibility as a citizen to make decisions that are right for you or the nation.
Unfortunately, too many people do exactly that.
sheshe2
(83,898 posts)Ask the respondents, I know many of them well. Ask them how they feel.
Many of us support this President, though we do have a hair on fire contingent that runs around saying yikes he's caving@!#$%^&* Syria/Russia, SS, Obamacare, Iran etc etc etc.
As for unconditional support, that is your statement not mine. I believe in the man. I believe that he will do the best that he can for this country. He is no god or diety that can make things happen at will. There are laws to follow and lawmakers that do not want to see that happen!
As I said you are free to have your opinion.
mindwalker_i
(4,407 posts)"As for unconditional support, that is your statement not mine," followed by, "I believe in the man." These are contradictory, at least without more information. The original question of this post, "Do you support Obama," could mean anything since it lacks any details or context. When Bust et. al. used the phrase, "Support the troops," it was intended to quash dissenting views of people who were against the Iraq war as somehow being against the troops and unpatriotic. When I see something like, "Do you support Obama," it makes me uneasy in that, at best, it's cheerleading like "go Broncos" or some meaningless crap, or at worst, it's intended to coerce people to go along with whatever a person wants to do, without thinking through the consequences or implications.

I'll be supporting President Obama even this Spring and early Summer when I can't be online as much. I pointed out the discrepancy they face in the valentine department as well. Still think we should be able to 'follow' whom we wish. Maybe if enough people lobbied for it....
Anyway, I'll suggest one way people can gauge the true level of their support for President Obama: try showing up in RedNeckLand wearing campaign gear and deal with the flack you'll get. If you really want to test yourself, go alone. (I used to celebrate Veterans Day by wearing my Harry Bridges (ILWU) union tee shirt into a VFW hall and see how long I could stay before they kicked me out. Doesn't work in the MidWest, though, because even the older guys don't seem to have heard of the ILWU, although I guarantee you they hate unions with a passion. But I digress....

Wedding turns Into A Funeral - something like that for a subject line.
I think that's true for a lot women around the world. And then BAAAAAAAM! He catches you in the cross hairs and the death of you as an individual occurs.
Between a mini vid of three black men throwing their head back in laughter and then seeing that subject line on a thread first thing this morning - my stomache hurts from laughing so hard.
I don't ever want to laugh about a thread title in regards to such a morbid and terrible subject again.

The TPP and SS cuts (chained CPI) were the tipping point for me. We seem to have a choice between a moderate republican and crazy people. Where is the populist that ran for office? sheshe2
(83,898 posts)yet if you believe that Obama and GWB are one in the same , then you are sadly misinformed.
Here is one link. You can use google for information on the rest of your concerns.
On Monday, the federal government announced it had sold off the remaining shares from its $49.5 billion bailout of General Motors in 2009. But the $10.5 billion loss on paper obscures the massive total return on investment for the U.S. economy overall and American taxpayers in particular. As a new analysis from the Center for Automotive Research found, had GM and Chrysler failed altogether, the result could have been 4.1 million jobs lost across the U.S. economy in 2009 and 2010, with federal transfer payments and $105 billion in lost income and payroll tax revenue for the U.S. Treasury.
In its report, CAR examined two scenarios that showed Uncle Sam reaped a return on investment ranging between 334 to 768 percent. In the worst case, the failure of the Bush and Obama administrations to rescue GM and Chrysler led to complete collapse of the American auto industry and the death of its supplier network. In the "GM only" case, CAR's only assumption was that other automakers could not replace GM capacity and employment until 2011. As the full report explained, the payoff to American taxpayers for the $13.7 billion lost in the sale of shares of companies has been immense:
Our results show the U.S. government saved or avoided the loss of $105.3 billion in transfer payments and the loss of personal and social insurance tax collections--or 768 percent of the net investment. Additionally, 2.6 million jobs were saved in the U.S. economy in 2009 alone and $284.4 billion in personal income saved over 2009-2010.
Even more impressive are the results of the GM scenario which did not even require the assumption of shutting down the supplier sector or other automaker employment. The only assumption was that other automakers could not replace GM capacity and employment until 2011. In this case, the U.S. government avoided the loss of $39.4 billion in increased transfer payments and lost taxes in just two years: 2009-2010. This is 334 percent of the projected $11.8 billion of Treasury funds not recovered on the public's investment in GM. We should add once again that in this scenario, the U.S. economy avoided the loss of 1.2 million jobs in 2009 and the loss of $129.2 billion in personal income in 2009-2010.
The Center's assessment may actually understate the impact of deciding to "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." (That is, the future Mitt Romney proposed not for the city but for the American auto industry.) Had President Obama refused to provide a lifeline to the GM and Chrysler in early 2009, the broader U.S. economy may have experienced an "Industrial Lehman Brothers Effect" that could have devastated the American manufacturing sector for decades to come. Older centers of the industry in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois would have been gutted. Just as important:
snip
But thanks to the Bush and Obama administrations, the Upper Midwest did not enter an economic death spiral leading to a permanent depression.
The $10.5 billion the Treasury ultimately lost on its GM shares, along with the $1.9 billion not recouped from Chrysler may well be the best investment Uncle Sam ever made.

I have reluctantly concluded that the hatred of Obama is driven by pure racism. I can find no other meaningful explanation. Because the majority of his policies and positions mirror GW Bush - or copy the republicans original ideas -like the ACA (as outlined earlier).
As a person who works in science field I really try and let the data/evidence guide my conclusions. I try and be open to what the data are saying. Then I must reluctantly accept it's answer, no matter how much it upsets me.

I'm just saying my republican brother-in-law hates President Obama with a passion. I ask why? I expect a reasoned and measured response as to the details. I can't get any. I point out the B Obama's policies and GW Bush's policies (and positions) are very similar or the same. It's ok to hate/dislike someone's positions - but you have to be able to articulate why. Some democrats seem to want to love Obama and disregard his positions, just as some republicans want to hate Obama and disregard his positions. Let the evidence guide you, not some silly hope, dream or belief. President Obama's a very smart guy, but I think we've been punked (and it makes me sad).

I support President Obama because he is a good man. He is competant, accomplished and pragmatic. He is a dedicated family man, and an inspirational leader.
His realistic supporters understand there was a tremendous amount of projection onto this president, irrational hatred from the far right and unrealistic expectations from the far left and some in between.
I worked to give President Obama the votes he needed in Congress. Not enough of us did. He was elected President, not crowned King.
He inherited the 2nd greatest economic freefall in US history. His policies, entirely without support and with unprecedented obstructionalism from the radical right in Congress, produced the quickest return to positive job growth in 25 years. His policies saved the auto industry. He has oversaw the greatest turn-a-round in job creation in US history. President Obama has overrsaw the greatest turn-a-round in the DOW in US history. He has reduced the yearly deficit more than every other president combined. He has presided over the most scandal free administration in US history. By next year he will have ended both of the wars he inherited. President Obama passed the first step to universal health care, a goal talked about for 100 years.
He is not short of accomplishment, but many of his critics are short of perspective and balance.

I was just so excited about him and his candidacy and campaign -- his ideas, his intelligence, his slogans, his lovely family. It was a very special time. It has been so nice to have intelligence, competence, and his thoughtful demeanor in the White House after 8 years of the dim one.

(13,324 posts)honestly was somewhat exhilarating, getting to be a part of history and all. By 2012 I was a little disillusioned, but nonetheless I recognize his intelligence and good intentions, and only wish he could have done more to make this country a better place, not that he hasn't done anything by any means - certainly he's done a hell of a lot more good than McCain or Romney every would have.
So yes, on balance, I support our President. Not like I really have a viable alternative.

(64 posts)He might even have some understanding of negotiations, and the application of power to achieve important goals.
Unlike some people I could mention, around here, who have a demonstrated ability to throw rocks and to complain that no one takes them seriously.
So Yes: I like my President Barack Hussein Obama and I've got his back in the coming political struggles.

Am hoping that with no election coming up for him he can do things the way he wants.....The election this year will affect Senate and House, and I wonder what he'll do to help the Dems trying to get elected . ..

I understand you used to be a Republican - right? I'm always fascinated in the approach to the Democratic Leadership that former Republicans take.
Thanks in advance!

(34,589 posts)When I was young, Republican ideas seemed to make more sense.
One day over beer, a friend made the claim that European countries had better health care than the US did, and at a lower cost. I set out to do research to prove him wrong, but found out that he was right.
"Hmmm... so free-market economics isn't always best... what else am I wrong about?"
I did some research and found out that most of what I'd casually believed was wrong. The evidence was clear: Liberal policies simply works better, far better, than any other way. That's true whether we look at America's history, or we compare countries today.
As to Bush vs. Obama... the record speaks for itself.

(16,380 posts)Warm response and I believe heartfelt. I will however be disappointed when folks that have weighed in here and later on have legitimate criticisms of some of his actions are labeled "haters' etc. etc. by some of the respondents here.
For me, I have always supported the man as my President and he has made me proud that he is our President) on many occasions. AND disappointed me more then once. But so has my husband. (The person I love most on this planet.)

(26,650 posts)and I think he's our best hope right now.
But, from an aging liberal, before I die, I want to see one more "far left," take no prisoners liberal take the country by storm and blow away America's raging right wing, free market, religious fundamentalists with the truth and a real quest and passion for "liberty and justice for ALL." I know, dream on...
The election and re election of President Obama, while he's not the uncompromising liberal I long for, is such a huge step forward, that I'm grateful to have lived long enough to see it, and commend him for the many things accomplished, especially in the face of outrageous and unrelenting opposition. He's blazing the trail and our first family has shown America more class and grace than we deserve.

If there hadn't been an unbelievably well financed and coordinated effort to make him fail and to stymie hs every appointment and initiative. I believe he came in truly intending to be a benevolent president, and was completely blindsided upon finding to what extent evil people would go just to make things bad for the country as long as they could make things bad for him. I also believe he has done an unbelievable job under those circumstances, unparalleled in modern presidential history. You'd have to go back to Truman to find a Congress so hostile, and maybe even then you wouldn't find one.
As for me, personally, well, we're both in this pic. You figure it out.

I really trust his goodness.
He's doing the best he can while the GOP shoots him every chance they possibly can get. Considering the GOP's plan was to make this presidency the worse ever, Obama is doing a damn fine job under these conditions.

(3,709 posts)I learned a long time ago working on various campaigns that I never agreed 100% with any politician, even those I considered as liberal, never agreed with me on everything. It is with much surprise that I see so many people on this board who are willing to throw this man under the bus because he dares to think differently from them.
He is not a disappointment... he is the man we hired to do this job. We hired him because of his intellect, his demeanor, and that moral compass he talks about. We didn't hire him to agree with us on everything. While I wanted to see him kick sand in the faces of these Republican nitwits, he tried to do the right thing... compromise. In my opinion, he tried too hard for too long, but he wouldn't have been the man we elected if he hadn't tried.
For all of those who are 'so very disappointed' in Barack Obama, I only want an honest answer to this question.
Would you rather have John McCain or Mitt Romney in the Oval Office?
Just imagine where this country would be at the moment...without Barack Obama.
Yes... I support my president.
