Olympic Spoiler: Hockey

Cute turns ugly for (Men's) Team USA

Indeed, the U.S. never really created anything approaching a tying goal in the final moments as Canada's superlative team defense kept the American attackers neutralized and at bay.

For a collection of players that had created an identity in Sochi as a deep, dangerous team that could hurt you from anywhere in the lineup, the Americans came up far short of that kind of performance, often too cute with the puck, often a step out of sync against a blazing-fast Canadian team.

Meanwhile, a Canadian team that had struggled to find its offensive rhythm all tournament -- having scored just 13 goals, seven of which were by defensemen Drew Doughty and Shea Weber -- delivered the more dangerous of the chances and, in the end, it was Jamie Benn who scored all the goals Canada would need to advance to a gold-medal game Sunday against Sweden.

Anger? Disappointment?

The Canadians outplayed the Americans on every level from the beginning of the game to the end. I was surprised the score was not more lopsided. Great job Team Canada! You deserve to advance to the playoff. The American team clearly does not.

But my point is, Team USA fell way short of expectations. They were hyped as a much better team than I saw today and that's the shame.

The USA went with team over talent. There were an number of guys who got left off (Bobby Ryan, Keith Yandle, Jack Johnson) because they didn't fit the team mold. A risky choice, but this group played like a team and an American should be proud. Make no mistake, we were the underdog today. We always will be until we win gold or at least finish ahead of Canada. Canada has ZERO respect for USA Hockey. It's unfortunate they got beat while Canada only shows up when the medal round starts, but so it goes. I hope the Swedes beat them, but they'll probably manage to show up long enough for Crosby to get a cheap goal past Lundqvist and win.

Jonathan Quick played great in goal. Canada clearly had more opportunities. A great game though. I'm rooting for Canada in the finals.
