A House Commerce Committee voted on Monday to kill a bill introduced by state Rep. Jared Brosett to prohibit sexual orientation and gender identity based discrimination. It will therefore remain legal for private owners to deny housing to LGBT residents of Louisiana, The Times-Picayune reported Monday.
Federal rules established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development already protect LGBT people from some housing discrimination, but private owners can still legally discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. The legislation voted on today would have applied to large businesses or landowners with more than three units.
Mondays bill was one of several backed by the organization Equality Louisiana, an LGBT advocacy group based in Baton Rouge.
Matthew Patterson, the groups Research and Policy Coordinator, said he is optimistic that they will pass other legislation, although he was surprised by the 13-5 vote on Mondays bill.

And some people wonder why the LGBT Community gets up in arms over equality. Well this is just one of the many reasons.

(10,491 posts)1. This ultimately needs to be resolved at the federal level
Make sexual orientation a protected class, and this all goes away.
In the meantime, cities can pass their own legislation protecting LGBT people. Create safe enclaves in these states.

With all the hate that there is in America and the well if it doesn't affect me attitude, we are a long way from any Federal legislation for relief.
Marriage equality is just one example. You would think that one is a no brainer and even with all the support we have gotten for Marriage equality, it still gas to go through the courts.
