all public school children children should be required to take anger management classes of an appropriate learning level every day they are in class. Just like reading and math. Private schools should be encouraged to do likewise.
Adult anger management groups should be free and open in every municipality, like firehouses.
Since we have to have guns, could we please have fewer messed up angry people around us?

(30,677 posts)if we can ever get it. Which I doubt.
I think we have to start earlier, and with a different approach, since we will be surrounded by guns (and knives) for all the foreseeable future.

(5,902 posts)it was the schools job to provide "book learning".But it seems that over the last 30 years alot of parents are to busy/don't care, and pass little to their kids that is positive, and the schools don't do much better.

(30,677 posts)I actually homeschooled my kids, so this is a fictional imaginary public school system that actually works, that in my fantasy would have some psychological therapy element, in the same we schools include Hygiene classes. For the public health.
Actually Cognitive Therapy for example, there's nothing personal about it. it's just a regimen you learn so your brain doesn't turn to shit.
But it would never happen anymore than we can afford to go around and seize people's weapons.
I'm just trying to have a discussion about another stupid strategy that apparently will never work. Cuz it's too painful if I don't at least try.

Anger plus no weapon very seldom kills.
Why don't you just take your crap back to the gungeon.

(30,677 posts)I f we educated our children how to respond to provocation on such a wide scale that virtually no one would even think to grab a gun in anger?
I don't think we can remove guns from the US.
But I think education about dealing with others could in time have a gigantic effect if we took it seriously.

(6,107 posts)The good parents already do it.
The bad parents won't.
The schools won't help much if the home contradicts the school by its behavior.

(30,677 posts)like others have a fantasy that we could have sensible gun reform laws and that would help . And even others fantasy that if we have sensible gun reform laws that means that OBAMA and the UN ail come and get our guns, now that they know where they are.
No, it'll never happen because nobody gives a flying fuck about education in this country, and it shows.
I'm just saying, in a fantasy world where we had a decent public education system and effective mental health care, They might have an anger management element in the curriculum, and that would be a positive thing.
I think there would be fewer deaths from anger and conflict domestically.
librechik
(30,677 posts)I would appreciate the same.

(4,524 posts)If you're concerned about gun deaths, why not have free gun safety programs and effective gun control?
Your premise that gun deaths are an issue with anger is flawed. That's only one part of the problem.
librechik
(30,677 posts)the more severe and restrictive the better. I even advocate for liability insurance for all gun owners.
But the other part, the education needs to be expanded to include how to handle your anger so that it doesn't wind up in a gunfight.
Of course there would be gun deaths from accidents and so on. But I believe far less. Maybe not. Maybe there is no hope.
But the two remedies you mentioned, realistically, we'll never get those nationwide.

(30,677 posts)is pretty standard for all humans. And we manage to pay for sports arenas for high school kids, perhaps a bit better money management is called for as well.
Either way--I'm not gonna get it. And we're gonna go on killing each other and wring our hands helplessly.

(30,677 posts)we obviously can't stop guns from killing people.
Is there a way we can stop people from wanting to kill people quite so much?
Maybe if we taught our children how to deal better with anger and conflict, we could make a small dent in the number of deaths.
It would take a long time, but I believe that is an additional strategy we could advance, in addition to forwarding sane regulation efforts.
