Barack Obama Attends "A Raisin in the Sun" Musical on Broadway

The president and first lady caught the American masterpiece on Friday night at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York, where it first opened more than 50 years ago.

Lorraine Hansberry’s play, set in 1950s Chicago, centres on a struggling working-class black family anxiously awaiting a $10,000 (Dh36,730) insurance cheque and the ensuing squabbles over how to spend it. It may touch a chord with Obama, who calls Chicago home and who has a parent from Africa, a strong theme in the play.

Lorraine Hansberry being one of the better playwrights of her time. The tile comes from a poem by Langston Hughes. Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee star in the film version from 1961 which people could watch at home, and the play exists in published forms at many if not most public libraries, either in a collection or on it's own.
