I just started substitute teaching and joined the teachers union. They are asking for a 21% raise of teachers over a 3 year period. I live in San Francisco and the cost of living is becoming even more expensive for teachers to live in the city. The techies are driving up the rents and they are buying apartments in the city and evicting people who have rent controlled apartments. They figured out how to evade the Ellis act.
This is my first time I have ever been in a union. My first boyfriend and ex husband were union carpenters and my husband is in the teamsters union with a major airline. I have seen and lived with having the benefits of a good paying job, with medical, dental, sick pay, paid vacation and life insurance . I feel so proud now that I am in the union.
