I haven't chimed in at all on this as I have been traveling for work for a few weeks and then was down and out sick with a stomach bug. I just read about 6 different reports on this.
My biggest problem with this whole thing is that the right wing nut job gun-toting militia people are now emboldened. This guy Bundy owes more than $1 million in grazing fees on federal land but has decided to not pay it. It isn't because he doesn't recognize the government as he claims, it's because he's a cheap right-wing fucker who's looking for some free stuff. I'd love to know if he gets any kind of federal subsidies on his cattle. Wouldn't that be a hoot.
Now the Kochs and Alex Jones are loving the "WIN" as much as the camo-wearing rim jobbers living in mommy's basement. So now what? I say send in a drone and kill the fucker's cattle. No cows...no fees. Problem solved. What will they do shoot the drone?
I'm sure I'll start a battle of the threads but this story seems insane to me. If I decide to just not pay my federal taxes I go to jail. If I decide to throw a big party in a federal park without a permit...I go to jail. If I decide to pitch a tent alongside a federal highway...they come take me away. Same rules apply to this fool.

(86,775 posts)the drone remedy myself on the first and fifth days of this conversation. I think it would be the way to go and the RWNJ contingent would be scrambling for a rock to climb under.
I do hope that they were observed with enough scrutiny to discover who they are and where they hole up most of the time and that they are under scrutiny like never before. These are the Ps OS the homeland group should be watching.
Needless to say, they are being funded by the kochs and others and many are camping out at Bundy's for the summer to make sure no round-ups happen... making a stronger argument for the drone remedy.
Aside from permanently removing the cows from sensitive environment where they should never have been in the first place, a lot of wildlife will benefit from the nutrition 900+ cows will provide over about 14 months maybe longer.

(28,961 posts)They will probably garnish his wages or any number of things. It would have been dumb to have a big shoot out and killed a bunch of naïve idiots. Things will work out for the better in the long run.

(6,719 posts)similar all over the grazing area -- something to make the cows go crazy for short periods of time? Bundy would not like that, I suspect. Might remove his cows from public land. Course, he might then charge more for the beef!!

(22,651 posts)Ranchers adjacent to our public lands get to graze cheap and we, our DOI/BLM pay for everything else. (roads, fences, everything)
We spend many billions more to fix cattle grazing damage, fence, road that land,- then the grazing fees take in.
Even last week. We (our BLM) probably paid that contractor about $300 per head to conduct that round-up, plus thousands more for helicopter contractors. I saw another round-up contract. They charge 1,500 just to unload a helicopter from its trailer. They are paid by the animal.
Then the BLM turned the animals back loose. Even if they didn't turn the cattle loose, they wouldn't even come close to the round-up costs from any auction sale.
