Here’s how we got to 8 million Obamacare signups

"SNIP..........................

After a two-week extension of the Obamacare open enrollment deadline, the White House announced today that 8 million people have signed up through the health-care law's insurance marketplaces since it opened in October. That means about 900,000 people picked a health plan in the two weeks since the end of the original March 31 enrollment deadline.

When signups hit 7 million on April 1, I wrote about why that number alone didn't necessarily say whether the Affordable Care Act would succeed. The same goes for the newly announced 8 million signups.

Now that we pretty much have the final tally (a few state-run exchanges, including the District's, are still allowing enrollment through the end of the month), here's what enrollment actually looked like vs. expectations set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in September before the insurance marketplaces opened.

I support the ACA, actually prefer single payer, but will work with what we have. My concern.... actually having the many who have signed up pay for the services, and having the insurance companies and physicians honor the newly insured.....

New income for big insurance.

Limited to 20% profit = $1,248,000,000 mandated new profit/year.

I suppose we should extract Medicare and find the real average payment per month... That is a guestimate

Updated: "A national average cost for you, according to the calculator, is $3,661 a year ($305 per month)." http://bit.ly/1mwgJbo

Or roughly 5x my original figure = roughly 6 billion in new, mandated, profits per year for big insurance...

Now, how long before they use that money to lobby to destroy all the good reforms in Obamacare?

Update 2: "8 million people signed up for private insurance in the Health Insurance Marketplace." http://1.usa.gov/1fgeP74

and qualifying events happen all the time. And Medicaid signups are year round. In the meantime many states like Maryland are adopting new systems for the state exchange for the next open enrollment period.

Virginia is having a difficult battle with the tea party over Medicaid expansion. As more states implement it, more will get coverage.

This is not a one shot deal. Now that ACA has more of an aura of success, more people will want to check it out.

like the better coverage, no copay for preventive screenings, workplace wellness programs, etc.

Not enough people talk about the patient protection part of the PPACA.
