http://www.politicalgarbagechute.com/the-real-reason-bill-oreilly-wont-stfu-about-stephen-colbert-hosting-the-late-show/In point of fact, CBS hiring of Stephen Colbert proves just how completely irrelevant Fox News is to mainstream America, and that is the central issue driving the gargantuan levels of outrage and ire aimed at Colbert as soon-to-be new bosses. I dont know what they think CBS should have done hire someone from among their ranks? I hate to break it to them but theres a reason you dont see a lot of conservative comedians breaking into the big time: jokes need to be rooted in a fundamental truth in order to be funny. Not just fundamental, but universal. The entire conservative/Republican movement of the last 30 years has been an effort in walling themselves off from objective truth because you know, librul meediuhh biass and indeed from the rest of us Americans who dont agree with their ideologies.
You know, its funny when Fox News crows about having the highest ratings of any cable news outlet. First of all, there are really only three of them, and CNN is so chock-full of derp these days that the only time you watch it is if youre in an airport and you dont have to shit so youre stuck at the bar watching it. MSNBC is Foxs ideological counterpart, but they dont seem to have the same ability to toss out every scrap of unbiased journalistic credibility they have to just pound away at an entrenched, fringe philosophy. Its funny to me that no one ever calls out Fox News ratings for what Id call the Howard Stern Effect, meaning that when the radio and comedic icon was rising to the top, he was pulling in huge ratings, due in large part to people who actually hated him.
...
CBS didnt care about any conservative fallout because they knew that the people who watch Fox News simply wouldnt be watching their network once the late local news came on anyway. Bill OReilly and his fellow conservatives are terrified because between Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan OBrien, theres nary a conservative among them. Theyre all true comedians and therefore will have no problem lambasting the left when necessary, but represented within the current stable of late night hosts (hey TV execs, on a side note: Can we get a female on one of the big late night shows, please?) is the unflinching reality that conservatism in America is not the mainstream, and the mainstream doesnt really care how much the right freaks out about anything from Benghazi to blowjobs to late night hosts because thats all the right does now: Freak out about stuff.

(1,665 posts)I've been saying that for a while now!
The conservative umbrage brigade is full of, well, umbrage that they're not taken seriously anymore. Look at the Honey Maid commercial responding to the right wing haters--Seriously, if you haven't, then watch it now!
The day of the right-wing backlash meaning anything is ending, and they won't go quietly. They will go ineffectively, just not quietly.
It only makes it harder for them when liberal issues are actually winning battle (Flush Rush, the Mozilla CEO thing, etc.)

(145,152 posts)Colbert has spent the last 10 years mocking O'Reilly by pretending to be a conservative pundit based on O'Reilly. Now Colbert is getting rewarded for these efforts and O'Reilly's feelings are hurt.

(15,381 posts)Pure jealousy. I don't know, but I would guess that Letterman's audience is bigger than O'Reilly's, and it's definitely bigger in the under 49 demographic that is so important. He's tried to match Colbert on humor as well as trying to tar him with "un-American" views and always failed. His one thing that he could always brag about was the size of his audience compared to the Daily Show and Colbert Report, and he's not going to be able to do that when Colbert takes over.

Thing is this - Colbert knows how to turn off his comedy central personality. He'll do the Late Show in the same manner as every other late show host does it - where they have no issue lamblasting either side of the political spectrum. If a politician makes a fool of themselves you can bet Colbert and the other Late Night hosts will joke about it.
But in the past when right-wing personalities have been given a chance to do mainstream hosting it's always been an epic fail. Just look at what happened when Rush Limbaugh was given a chance to host EPSN Sunday Night football. ESPN and Limbaugh swore it was all about Limbaugh's love & knowledge of football and that Limbaugh would put aside partisan politics. That lasted 4 weeks into the season when he decided to insult Donovan McNabb saying the only reason the media likes him is because he's black.
Who really wants to take that kind of risk?

(15,381 posts)I'm sure O'Reilly suffered no delusions that he was in the running, and if there was an actual application process for which he could thrown his name in the ring, I doubt he would have done so. It's just that O'Reilly hates to see anyone succeed more than he does. In fact, O'Reilly probably just hates to see anyone succeed because he feels that it takes away from attention for him.
Plus he really hates it that some guy like Colbert, with whom he pretends to be friendly because even he knows that if he wasn't, it would just give Colbert more ammo to mock him, is going to be the one.
The thing I can say about Colbert is that no matter what, he seems to be enjoying his life, and he doesn't have to be "on" all the time like Bill is, which is why he'll make a good host. And living well is always the best revenge.

I'd imagine there will be at least a few conservatives who will be disappointed when they realize that Colbert isn't actually a conservative.

(14,549 posts)I don't know if Colbert is taking his 'mock-O'reilly' schtick to CBS. He may drop it or he may do a more generic version of it.
Once Colbert drops the O'Reilly obsession, O'Reilly's star fades.
Also, Conan O'Brien has been off network TV for almost 4 years now, and Jimmy "The Man Show" Kimmel IS conservative (and not that funny).

(82,849 posts)CBS, from my reading of Billo's rantings, should consult with Billo and other conservative oracles before making any programming or personnel moves. CBS should ignore market realities on what makes money, but instead base its business decisions solely on keeping Billo and his ilk happy, and expect nothing in return?
Will Billo create a Commisariat of Acceptable Programming himself, or just outsource it?

It's actually kind of sad seeing the seasoned "news" guy obsessed with a comedian who owns his behind time & time again.

Dishonesty and comedy is incompatible.
A comedian cannot share a wry observation based on a lie and expect laughs.
