Ronald Reagan popularized the idea that people on welfare are a drain on the economy. Fox News carries that mantle today, making regular blanket characterizations of the countrys poorest families as big spending welfare frauds. Heres why theyre wrong but dont expect them to admit it.
Families receiving public assistance spend on average less than half as much as families that don't receive public assistance. Considering those very moderate figures, it's safe to say that most of the folks represented by the red bars aren't on welfare for selfish personal gain, but because they actually need the support.

(25,249 posts)This makes perfect sense as people have to have a place to live, eat and get to and from work.
Then things trail off for these people: with Insurance next, followed by Other (not sure what would fall in this category), Entertainment, Apparel & Services(clothes) and lastly Healthcare.
With the money that they earn at work & any public assistance they may get - they have to be able to pay the top three (live, eat & transport) and still have enough money left over to make their lives barely liveable to want to get up in the morning and do it over again.
