"Why can't they carry guns in prison? That's where you need them! That place is full of criminals!"

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by ScreamingMeemie (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Last night, Stephen Colbert took aim at Georgia's new "guns everywhere" law.

But shockingly, the "guns everywhere bill" doesn't cover some everywheres. Yes, it broadens conceal carry eligibility to include people who have committed crimes with guns, but only after they're out of jail. Why can't they carry guns in prison? That's where you need them! That place is full of criminals!

(audience laughter)

This "guns everywhere bill" is a good start. But it still requires you to carry a gun, to have a gun. That's why I say we must broaden "guns everywhere" to "everywhere is guns". All buildings in America must provide concealed weapons in event of a non-gun-having emergency. Just use the gun on the chain to shoot the glass, and grab the gun.

(audience laughter)

Because the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. And if everybody has a gun, chances are at least one of them will be good.

But what Colbert is making fun of is really not too far off from what the pro-gun militants are after---they want to do away with as many "gun-free zones" (their term) as possible, and get the American public accustomed to their country being one big armed camp. Guns behind glass in prisons? Bit of a reach. But groups of guys carrying AR-15 assault rifles into burger joints? No problem. And the pro-gun movement has the bought-and-paid-for politicians---and the short attention span population---to make it happen. As always, there's daily proof of all this in DU's Gun Control & RKBA group.

American cowboy fantasies are incompatible with a civilized society in which millions are in close contact with each other and ruled by massive legal codes. While we pretend to need to defend ourselves against bogeymen, our lives are being stolen by very real and very rich men who live safely out of range, and who hide behind their own private armies.

They aren't scared of our guns. We are. And some of us imagine that more guns will make us less afraid.

I remember when the Heller decision came out---it read like Wayne LaPierre had dictated it over the phone to Scalia word-for-word, a genuine historical gift to the gun rights movement. And you DU Gun Enthusiasts got maybe two days worth of gloating joy out of it---after which you reverted to the usual rank paranoia and fear mongering. If RKBA is doing so Goddamned well, AA, why doesn't it ever feel like it? Let me give you a small hint: when a political movement harbors individuals who feel they have to phone in death threats to gun dealers in a bound-to-fail effort to stave off inevitable safety features in firearms, that's a political movement that's in trouble. And I can promise you, it animates your political opponents. End of sermon, for the time being.

Both sides have been waging wars of rhetoric and legislation ever since 1968. For 25 years the restrictionists were winning with every increasing restrictions and never being really being happy either. As the pendulum swung in the early 1990s, the RKBA kept upping their rhetoric and agenda. As long as your fighting about guns in bars, they aren't fighting about guns in other public areas.

Complacency and moderation are not rewarded in the gun legislation wars.

I do not condone, support, or sympathize with violence or threats of violence.

This is not really big news and would be better served posted in the Guns forum. Thanks!
