Welfare Wasn’t Welfare Back In My Day

Welfare Wasn’t Welfare Back In My Day
Posted by constitutional mistermix at 8:31 am

Ben Carson, in his book, tells how his grades improved tremendously when a government program provided him with free eyeglasses because he could barely see. Not only that, in “Gifted Hands” we read this nugget: “By the time I reached ninth grade, mother had made such strides that she received nothing but food stamps. She couldn’t have provided for us and kept up the house without that subsidy.”

Well, isn't that interesting? Ah, but you see, Carson has an excuse as to why the situation with his mother is completely different from the situations with everyone else currently on welfare:

The culture was different then, Carson insists. “I think there was a time when people were not proud of taking handouts,” he said. “There were more people who did have that drive and determination. You do what you have to do.”

He said this in front of The View co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, herself being a welfare mother. As you could probably guess, doing such a thing made the wingnutosphere go wild with joy.

These jokers are so lacking in insight that they have no idea what they're saying.

Carson should have stuck to pediatric surgery. He was good at that.

She is a "sacred cow" to many. Socially liberal about sex...the rest not so much.
-
I think she is as conservative as many. Really. Very conservative.
-
What Carson fails to address is that the "poor" cannot afford to spend on health savings accounts. the jobs are not there, and $10 an hour does not buy much. That the food programs enrich those that provide such programs (farm bill-big business).

I joined their discussions because of that. I was there a couple years. I kept getting banned and had to make new log ins. Quite the right wing forum there... although they claim it is not.

I got in some sensible thinking in there from time to time. But one had to be quite careful... and some truths/facts were not allowed.

The Repugs are floating him out as trial balloon. He is their idea of an "acceptable" minority.
I predict he will go the way of Michael Steele and Herman Cain.
remember them?

6. It's always "different" when it's your own family.

So welfare allowed his mother the breathing room to take care of her family while she tried to become self-sufficient and it was a gradual process, with the AFDC ending first and the Food Stamps helping out for some time after she had some low-paying job.

Dr. Carson though thinks that every other mother on welfare is just a taker.

He seems to say...reduce help that people get...make them pay for it...because they will feel better and be better.
-
He does not say where they are supposed to get the money.
