about Asbergers and shooting

Adam Lanza, and now, Robert Eliot. Of course, most people hear about AS only through the news media, so of course, I know I better say something, as one.

Yes, we are socially inept at times. We do not read social cues, nor understand the "in between the lines" stuff most people use to communicate. We are often that kid in school that is so smart, yet cannot apply themselves." Kids pick on us, teachers dislike us, but often, the intelligence we have shows later on.

Acompuer whiz name Mark had so much a problem finding friends he tried to make a new way of doing that, aka facebook. An awkward guy named Bill made windows. Sadly, many of the successful aspies wind up buying into the idea that "everyone hated me and no one helped me", which explains why Bill gates and Mark Zuckerberg hate public schools. They are fools for that, but it does show that many times, an Aspie feels that people hate him, or do not care.

However, we are nopt killers, or psychos. And while I will agree that mental health is badly needed, those who would shield the victim are not hel;ing. Did I hate my school, yes, but would I have killed anyone, no!

1. Do you mean Elliot Roger?

And no. there is the suggestion that he MAY have had Asperger's. Maybe he did, but you are right. Asperger's didn't have anything to do with his murderous rampage. He had NO understanding that other people exist independent from his casting them all as puppets on his stage. Psychopath shit.

2. I think the Asbergers can pay into the rage

I have a nephew who is age 52 and his parents are deceased. He is high functioning Asbergers and lives alone in an apartment. My family, his aunts and uncle look after him. Plus his church helps out too. I am retired and go see about him once a week and take him to the store and for doctor's appointments. He has advanced diabetes and has lost a leg and uses a walker.

He was teased and bullied all through school. He really had a hard time in school because he was fat and strange, so he was ridiculed and bullied.

He has a lot rage in him and since he became a tea party follower, he directs his range towards the Democrats. He says he wants to kill the president and all the top Democrats. He will say he hopes we have another 9/11. He told me he wanted to get a gun. This will never happen because my sister and I control his bank account and pay all his bills because he is not capable of doing it himself. So he could never purchase a gun. Plus he is physically unable to carry out any threat since he can hardly walk. When he starts on a rant, I just tell him I won't listen to his crazy talk. I know his father (my brother) had gotten him some counseling when he was alive. I used to take him to lunch, but he told me he didn't want to go to lunch with me anymore. I know that is because I am a democrat. He still goes to lunch with my sisters, they are republicans. Go Figure.

I think a lot of Asberger's rage probably came from their experiences in school where they were teased like my nephew was. They do not have the same emotional reaction to things that a normal does and don't handle any emotional conflict well. He is obsessed with the weather and writes weather reports about 4 times a day and tracks all the tornados and hurricanes. I put $50 in his paypal every month so he can buy storm videos which he watches all the time. When he is worried or upset, he will start talking about a big storm hitting us.

If he were not in such poor health and did not have any physical disabilities, he could probably be dangerous.

I understand your message. Keep in mind, though, thats there's also about 100 million gun owners who don't go on murderous rampages. Unfortunately, they are regarded the same as the handful that do... especially on DU. Hope things work out better for you.

5. Have you watched this season's storyline on Parenthood?

If so, what do you think of it? I mean, it's TV... but does it resonate at all?

Obviously, the Parenthood depiction of Aspergers has nothing to with this catastrophe, but that's also kind of the point, since this is such an aberration, and I believe Rodgers had additional serious issues. (I'm assuming he did have Aspergers, too, since his dad's lawyer made that claim and Rodgers also mentioned being a CA Regional Center client.)

7. I don't know much about Asbergers, but it does seem like people on DU are making some very broad

generalizations about it. Growing up I had a learning disability and was later diagnosed with depression and anxiety, so I can understand how you felt about school.
