.... Juan Reinaldo Sanchez, a former bodyguard who spent 17 years in Castro’s service, claims the 87-year-old Cuban leader lives in the lap of luxury while pretending to be a frugal communist revolutionary. ....
Castro allegedly had control of 20 luxury homes, including a Caribbean island getaway called Cayo Piedra. South of the Bay of Pigs, the island was reportedly serviced by several hundred yacht workers. One of his five yachts reportedly served as a floating hospital. Sanchez also said that the commercial fishing boats that supplied food for Cayo Piedra sold the surplus catch in Havana, while Castro pocketed the cash.
“Castro would sit in his large black leather director's armchair ... a glass of Chivas Regal on the rocks (his favorite drink) in his hand," writes Sánchez.
Only special guests were allowed to visit Cayo Piedra. Some of the lucky men were Gabriel García Márquez, CNN owner Ted Turner and Erich Honecker, former leader of communist East Germany. ....
"He was its master in the manner of a 19th century landowner. For him wealth was above all an instrument of power, of political survival, of personal protection,” Sanchez said. ....
When Forbes placed Castro on its list of the world’s richest kings and queens, the ruler was reportedly furious. He told the press that his salary was actually just $36. ....
