1. I saw the interview and her comment is being taken out of context

She said when her son was first diagnosed, she blamed herself and thought she was being punished for her abortion. She was raised in an extremely religious household.

No self-respecting god should be that vindictive.

Seriously? Your God brought down his wrath on your son because of something you did years ago?

6. When something troubling happens, people often look for a way to blame themselves.

Strangely, it's more comforting to think that you messed up and caused something bad to happen than it is to realize that bad (or in this case, difficult) things sometimes happen more or less at random.

I agree that the singer's thoughts are being taken out of context, here. She was just wondering out loud as to "why?". I don't believe she really thinks God caused this for that reason.

on a different scale, when my step son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 11, my wife often beat herself up wondering if anything she did caused it.

She still wonders about 11 years later.

I always reassure her that it had nothing to do with anything that she did or did not do.

Why worship an asshole who would hurt a child to punish a parent? Poor choice of deity on her part.

If you think he harmed your son, he's the one you want to punish.
