I came to Capitol Hill 20+ years ago working for G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery

The initials stand for "Gillespie Vanderbilt", incidentally, for anyone who is curious.

Chairman Montgomery was not one to suffer fools lightly, nor was he one to throw people under the bus. I do believe that if he were still there ("the last blue dog", or whatever), General Shinseki would not be offering his resignation today, because Chairman Montgomery would have demanded he stay on.

Eric Shinseki was frankly the greatest VA secretary we've ever had, and we are that much the worse off for his resignation. Chairman Montgomery would not have heard of it. We need more Congressmen like him...

This is also why Shinseki needs to be replaced with a strong leader who has proven to be a great leader during a crisis.

The problem comes from the GOP side of the Senate in the confirmation of such a person. The nominee must also be somebody the GOP woudl look foolish blocking.

That's why I hope President Obama nominates Russel L. Honoré. He's basically apolitical. He takes charge and makes things happen. And there's no way the GOP Senators could balk at a guy that President Bush appointed to clean up the mess that FEMA made in New Orleans after Katrina.
