I just watched a video of John McCain - back in Feb of this year - come out for getting Bergdahl released from his captors. In watching it - Anderson Cooper was the interviewer - I got the impression that such a prisoner exchanged was discussed with Congress as it sounded like McCain knew about it. Other Repubs have had similar positions as McCain in the past as well.
Did they lure President Obama into thinking that he was justified in going through with this prisoner exchange - just to trap him into a position that looks like he overstepped his bounds now? Was this an impeachment trap?
Look how fast they turned on him after this was announced. Even some Repubs that originally tweeted congratulatory tweets about the release - deleted them quickly.
Now - even some Dems - because they might be embroiled in some close 2014 race - are siding with the Repubs against the President - most probably to save their jobs.
Politics is really a dirty, dirty business. Sad - because these people are in a position to do such good for our country - but choose to play politics instead.
How can they look themselves in the mirror in the a.m.?

(45,251 posts)It will have political consequences, but maybe not the political consequences for which the Republicans hope. Impeachment of Clinton hurt Republicans and helped Clinton. (Then again, did it hurt Gore, though? Hard to know.)
I don't think this is all about Obama, who is in office, will remain there for another two years and cannot run again. I think it's about Democrats in general and November 2014 in particular. They want the Senate and they want it bad.

"Leave no man behind," President Obama didn't and the Republicans would've.
Thanks for the thread, global.

(3,580 posts)Going back through different articles, it sounds like this has been in the works for about 3 years. I found an article published in April on a military site that said the deal to exchange the 5 was back on, if I could find it with google, it wasn't a secret. Can you imagine 30 days of debate in congress? This was similar to getting bin laden in the sense it was very risky for the team that had to execute the exchange, after a 30 day debate it would have endangered everyone involved. So Obama didn't call them in plenty of time for the talking heads to go berserk before the fact, so what? In the words of the great Hillary Clinton, "what difference does it make?" he's back in US hands, it's done, if the gop wants to try to impeach Obama they'll look like idiots, it would take years to impeach him, is this what they want to do for the rest of his term? the backlash will be relentless, they will pay for it for a long time.

(16,254 posts)Obama doesn't often walk into a Republican trap. He sets them.
I think that if we are a bit more patient, we will see the final play in his notorious chess game. He knows the level of intelligence in that group and seems to enjoy playing with them. Granted, this was supposedly a situation that required speed, but Obama isn't so stupid as to fall into the Republican pit unless he has his proverbial ass covered.
For one, he got their permission to trade a year or so back. We don't know the REAL circumstances of the "walk away". Even though there is obviously a "rest of the story" Obama is one to let the Repugs trip all over themselves to "git" him. I think he enjoys that scene they put on. The more they expound, the deeper the pit they dig.
The only problem is that the public will believe the hyperbole, not the moment when they fall through the net. Only the Democrats will while giving a

(8,652 posts)Obama has been criticised for not pursuing bushco for war crimes. Shrub and Cheney have already been convicted Malaysia. If the US gors that route, the Hague won't be far behind. How fard do the repubs want to push us on bergdahl?

(32,077 posts)The group in Malaysia was just that -- a group. Without any legal meaning or authority whatsoever. It would be like you and three of your neighbors holding a war crimes trial and convicting someone. It has no meaning.
