From the technical director of the Theatre Department at the University of Evansville (Evansville, IN):
"Propping a show in Evansville can be a huge challenge on a tight budget.
Not infrequently, Hobby Lobby has been a source of cheap items of tacky decor. Things you wouldn't dream of putting in your house, but look wonderful onstage.
In light of recent events, UET props will no longer be sourced from this vendor. We will just have to make do."

At least they'll still have the business of TV preachers, because as they would have us believe, Heaven is decorated in gaudy, grotesquely bad taste.

(15,942 posts)You can find all sorts of goodies there. Cheap, tacky or some other interestingly kewl stuff as well.
I have used thrift stores for multi-million dollar films. Don't shop Hobby Lobby!

(20,176 posts)One of my best friends from college works for USA Networks original programming NYC (as a 2nd AD, started as a PA)...a lot of the set-staging you see on White Collar and Royal Pains. Thrift shop. Cheap garbage refinished, re-imagined or used as is...it's an art-form; the people that do it don't get enough credit. I wish I had that talent.
Thank you, set-stagers...you make TV/Film awesome and you do it with budgets that would handcuff most HS drama departments.

(32,640 posts)They will get them where they can, even if new. It would take forever to make a dozen silk roses, for instance, or wait for them to get donated to a thrift store. Evansville is a mid sized city, so thrift shopping is more limited than in NYC or Chicago.

(15,942 posts)They usually carry a lot of interesting things.
Not certain if having silk roses would be better than any other fabric roses. The audience definitely wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I think you were just using that as an example, so, I included a response to that.

(23,156 posts)is one of the very finest in the country.
A young man I know graduated there several years ago, did a master's program at the Catholic University in Washington, DC, and currently makes a living as an actor. I, of course, think he's wildly talented to begin with, but it's clear he learned an enormous amount at Evansville.
Plus it's an ethical school.

(23,156 posts)My young friend does almost exclusively live theater. He's had one small part on TV, and I hope he eventually does more, as well as movies, as I live a very long way from NYC and have never seen him perform.

(45,251 posts)Politicians raise money on things like this all the time, even though they don't intend to do a thing about it anyway. And, in this case, can't do much about it.
I'd rather send the money to a university theater department than to most politicians.
