ALL BIRTH CONTROL. ALL. OF. IT.
"The Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed that its decision a day earlier extending religious rights to closely held corporations applies broadly to the contraceptive coverage requirement in the new health care law, not just the handful of methods the justices considered in their ruling.
The justices did not comment in leaving in place lower court rulings in favor of businesses that object to covering all 20 methods of government-approved contraception.
Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby Inc. and a Pennsylvania furniture maker won their court challenges Monday in which they refused to pay for two emergency contraceptive pills and two intrauterine devices.
Tuesday's orders apply to companies owned by Catholics who oppose all contraception. Cases involving Colorado-based Hercules Industries Inc., Illinois-based Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc. and Indiana-based Grote Industries Inc. were awaiting action pending resolution of the Hobby Lobby case."

We have them posting amongst us and they post the most offensive comments and anti-women opinions.
If yesterday and today were not enough evidence for you, I don't know what to tell you.

(36,108 posts)The ACA makes sure you can't qualify for the exchanges if your employer offers coverage within a % of your income.
But no provision if your employer offers shit insurance
What a corporate clusterfuck
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)The fact that the supreme court has now rendered that law obsolete for religious reasons, should also render the whole "mandatory" part of the ACA obsolete. If you are required to buy insurance, and there are specific things that insurance needs to provide, then, taking away some of those provisions should also obsolete the mandatory nature of that coverage. Basically, what should happen, is that in cases like this, the employee should be able to sign up for an
ACA exchange, rather than be committed to using employer provided coverage.

I'm digging mine out too.
Ya gotta wonder just how long they have left before the general public just stands up, yells out in unison "We've fuckin' had it!" and starts tearing things down the system with their bare hands.
The oligarchs think they can get away with anything.
Well, the French aristocracy never saw it coming either.

(8,127 posts)hiding behind masks is so passé :p
people shouldnt be afraid to stand up for what they believe in.. showing your face is much more powerful than that mask...
so instead of people handing out guy fawkes masks (a failed terrorist)..
people should be handing out GAS MASKS to protect them from the chemical warfare that police engage in these days...
can you imagine the shock on police officers faces when everyone on the front lines whips out their gas masks and continues to move forward?
Moostache
(9,895 posts)The paramilitary forces that we currently call "police" bear no resemblance to what most of us grew up recognizing as police officers. They are dominated by way too many trigger happy douchebags to think that a protest of people carrying gas masks would NOT be fired upon...
It would make Kent State look like a scratch by comparison to the carnage they would unleash now. And I guarantee the media coverage would slant waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to the ->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

(8,127 posts)almost always invokes change..
if you look back at all the major labour struggles from the 1900s until the 1940s (and then the civil rights movement later)..
youll notice that people got hurt..
that doesn't mean that we have to be the aggressors or the attackers (and lord knows im not advocating that)..
but some folks on our side have to be willing to be injured (and possibly killed) for the causes they believe in..
if not, we'll never get the change we want and NEED....
I dunno if you had noticed, but weve tried this 'get sprayed in the face and taken to jail' tactic for the last 25-30 years.. hasn't really been working out for anyone (except the police getting lots of money thru fines)..
genwah
(574 posts)not so great of a possibility. But every action is different, every city and town present their own unique personalities. I remember a story from Dick Gregory's autobiography. [not a quote; what I remember. Mr. Gregory is in jail after being arrested at a protest] '..and there was this kid, and I asked him how old he was. He said "seven". I asked him if he knew why he was in jail> He said "Teedom". Ain't that something. A seven year old kid in jail for a word he doesn't know how to say."
I can easily see, soon, needing a new gas mask. I can't buy replacement filters for my old one. Do gas masks even need filters now? Did something new happen besides pepper spray?
When we're out, we may be out for "teedom", we may not understand the ramifications of confronting your 'trigger happy douchebags', we may not be pledging, "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor", but here's the thing. We're out there.

(45,274 posts)The fact is that the continuation of the oligarchy is dependent on the acquiescence of the downtrodden. There are many ways to bring a system down, and they all come to the surface when the cost of acquiescence becomes greater than the cost of noncompliance.

(22,165 posts)(It is a human issue, but that is beside the point) ... this ruling has the potential to reach far beyond birth control (and the limits placed on birth control coverage are horrid enough) ... Scientologists are fervent in their belief that psychiatry (and all psychiatric medications) is unfounded and a great evil, Jehova's Witnesses have prohibitions against blood transfusions ... right wing nut job Christians are against all sex outside of marriage ... should they be able to prohibit coverage for STDs (our high court seems to think they just might have that right).

(2,888 posts)Even though, as a software guy, I stand to profit from the machinations the insurance industry has to take as they develop policies, rates, & enrollment procedures for each of the coverage combinations of the 20 different methods of contraception. That's 20! policies, 2,432,902,008,176,640,000 combinations -- though, I suppose in practice it'll reduce down to an either/or value.

(20,219 posts)He sounded quite calm. According to him, this is not actually a very big deal, sounds more worrisome than it is. The government will simply offer non-employer-dependent coverage for women's special health needs.
So simple. (I thought libertarians were against gov't involvement.... but I guess he's not worried. Wonder how many women work at Cato, other than clerical "assistants" and "sanitation specialists" ?)
I trust PBO to work towards that. I don't trust the congresspukes to allow it.

They can be whatever religion they want to be, but this is not a theocracy, much as they try to forget. And I am not interested in some sort of Catholic or "Judeo-Christian" Sharia law being imposed, especially by a bunch of old men. They neither speak for me nor represent me.

(32,062 posts)who are going to realize they'd better pay attention when
(a) a one-night stand turns into a pregnancy they have no interest in supporting - but we've got great DNA technology now so support it they will (whether they are single or married to someone else etc)
(b) not to mention women who are otherwise "conservative" realize they've screwed themselves over when they can't get a BC prescription even for medical reasons (cramping etc)
(c) people in general start realizing they are not all members of the Catholic Church and maybe do not share those same extreme views ...
the list is endless really. This was a really really bad decision on the part of 5 old bigoted white men.

(13,133 posts)Oh Yea, all the outrage is more than warranted but i do see something that might be worse if they do get away with it. It's the idea they can rule anyway they want at anytime and nobody or any kind of group will be able to do anything about it. They have pretty much done that before and of late, but now seems like a kind of throw away with nothing to really lose except a small amount of positioning for them.
The payoff is great but the amount they gamble is small, just like a bunch of crooked stock brokers
It's a ruling that says business's needs are more important than the individuals and the only reasoning the business has to give is that is what the business has decided.
TBF
(32,062 posts)" It's the idea they can rule anyway they want at anytime and nobody or any kind of group will be able to do anything about it." - I think you are right that they feel like they can just do whatever they want and get away with it. So far they have. I wonder what it will take to get people mad enough to fight back.
