As a USA citizen I will be traveling in Canada soon. I will most likely need to get an eye check up during my visit.
What can I expect for this check up and any other medical care need?

(135,425 posts)Is your eye check up covered in USA? Why not do it before you leave?
Or are you going to go to a WALMART and use their services and just pay for it?
You might want to get some travel insurance in any event.

The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration!

(48,217 posts)They will treat you in emergencies until you are stable, and then if you need further treatment, you have to go back to your home country.
Famous example: Actress Natasha Richardson suffered her fatal head injury while skiing in Canada, so the Canadian hospital applied initial first aid, stabilized her, and then sent her back to the States.
I don't know of any legal way to receive routine care.

(8,646 posts)and I'm basing this on the fact that I used to live along the Alaska highway in Canada and we had many American tourists come through. Our local medical clinic had signs that had a list of the prices for those who didn't have insurance and were travelling through. So I think you can get the care if you pay for it up front - although I'm not sure that most clinics even have the capability of doing cash transactions...that particular medical clinic did because the doctors were also acupuncturists so did some cash transactions for that.
For an eye check up, it's private here so you can go anywhere and get one if you pay for it. It's been 3 years for me so I can't remember how much it was...$90? maybe? that was with contact lens prescription too. That's for optometrist - if you need a specialist you would need to go to a general practitioner at a clinic to get a referral. Again, if it was non-emergent you would probably have to pay although I'm not sure how they bill people who aren't citizens.
