from having their medicaid expand to cover the uninsured in other states for the three years that the feds are paying the whole freight? Surely if a citizen of say, California is traveling to see his family in say Texas and gets ill then Medical would pay for emergency treatment. This would simply expand that.

(25,704 posts)I, as a resident of Illinois, who is two years behind in Medicaide bills since we have no money, demand that we take on the indigent healthcare of Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan, since it is the right thing to do. It is my obligation because I said so.

In other words, each state decides what and how much it's going to do with their Medicaid, and one state isn't going to cover, another state's residents.

(23,156 posts)but I rather doubt one state could use its Medicaid funds to pay for the health care of those from another state. And it's not as though Medicaid covers everyone who deserves it in the first place.
Plus, as a practical consideration, how would New York, in your example, figure out which citizens from which states to cover? Would they need to be treated in NYS?

(8,311 posts)The healthy poor uninsured got insurance policies through the Exchange, the sick ones got regular Medicaid. However, it's nearly impossible to find a doctor accepting new adult Medicaid patients in many counties in Arkansas. A friend of mine has coverage, but she's limited to ER visits for emergencies until she can find a PCP in her county. She called them all on the list.
