The '50 Shades' debate is a lot like the Sports Illustrated debate

Remember the epic flamefests surrounding the SI cover showing the backs of the 3 scantily clad women in thongs?

Anyhow, those who were against the SI cover are most likely also against the storyline in "50 Shades." Am I right or am I right?

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

YOUR COMMENTS

Flamebait/trolling/meta discussion - and apparently calling out certain DUers in the last sentence.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Sun Jul 27, 2014, 03:51 PM, and voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I think the alerter got it right here. What little of the post there is seems designed simply to insult a group of people with whom he disagrees.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: And those jumping up and down defending glorified rape and domestic violence are probably the same ones who got off on the objectification of women on the SI cover. No doubt many of them are MRA's to boot.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: So you alerted about SOP issues, which aren't my job (at this time) as a juror. Also since the GD Hosts already decided to leave it, it looks like that is my vote too. Hopefully the jury agrees.

Thank you.

I didn't even state my opinion one way or the other. How do you know my stance on either topic? For the record, I'm neutral. It's none of my business. I haven't read 50 Shades, nor do I plan to. And I support the right of women to work in whatever field they choose.

You need to simultaneously be for all of women's choices and against certain choices or else ye be risking misogyny.

The people objecting to the book are objecting to non-consensual and abusive relationships. The people objecting to the models were less cohesive--some took issue with objectification, others had issues with the scanty costumes, others with matters of body image--the reasoning was all over the place.

But the book, pretty much everyone is irritated with the personal dynamic--save those who have read it and are also irritated with what is widely regarded, apparently, as really shitty writing.

Disclaimer--I've never read the book, and all I know about "SI" I have read here at DU.

I am against the promotion of rape, violence against women, and bad literature.

No one really had a problem with SI other than the fact that some folks thought the images belonged on DU.

They didn't belong on DU any more than the nasty one the other day of the woman over the guy's shoulder promoting Israel.

During the SI discussions I thought they were all about a problem with men's entertainment.

Turns out that it's an equal opportunity complaint, they have a problem with arousal in general.

33. Reminds me of that joke about the body parts arguing about which was most important....!
Mon Jul 28, 2014, 12:16 AM
Jul 2014

Here's the joke:

One day the different parts of the body were having an argument to see which should be in charge.

The brain said, “I do all the thinking so I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”

The eyes said, “I see everything and let the rest of you know where we are, so I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”

The hands said, “Without me we wouldn’t be able to pick anything up or move anything. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”

The stomach said, “I turn the food we eat into energy for the rest of you. Without me, we’d starve. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”

The legs said, “Without me we wouldn’t be able to move anywhere. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”

Then the rectum said, “I think I should be in charge.”

All the rest of the parts said, “You? You don’t do anything! You’re not important! You can’t be in charge.”

So the rectum said "We'll see about that," and closed up shop.

After a few days, the legs were weak, the stomach was queasy, the hands were trembling, the eyes were blurred and unfocused, and the brain was unable to think clearly. They all agreed that they couldn’t take this any more and agreed to put the rectum in charge.

The moral of the story?

You really don’t have to be the most important to be in charge, any asshole can do it.

I'm guessing that wasn't the most important part of that character's body, though..????

Regardless of what the cover displays, the monthly issues of SI are a far superior read than the 50 Shades series, which I have read...unless sports doesn't interest you. If that's the case it's none of my business and doesn't bother me one bit.

As far as the debate, I couldn't care less although what I did read I found somewhat amusing...I haven't been following it too much as I find the subject boring (just like the book) so I haven't formed an opinion as there are more important issues currently in the world that I would rather pay attention to, as depressing as they may be.
