Satanists want to use Hobby Lobby decision to exempt women from anti-abortion laws

By Scott Kaufman
Monday, July 28, 2014 8:52 EDT

In a statement, the Satanic Temple said that it will use the Supreme Court’s recent Hobby Lobby decision to exempt its believers from state-mandated informed consent laws that require women considering abortions to read pro-life material.

Informed consent or “right to know” laws state that women seeking elective abortions be provided with information about alternatives to the procedure, often couched in language that attempts to personify the fetus. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 35 states currently have informed consent laws, and of those, 33 require that the woman be told the gestational age of the fetus.

In some states, that information consists of pro-life propaganda that links abortion to a higher incidence of breast and ovarian cancers, or discusses “post-abortion syndrome,” a mental condition not recognized by any major medical or psychiatric organization.

Because the Satanic Temple bases its belief “regarding personal health…on the best scientific understanding of the world, regardless of the religious or political beliefs of others,” it claims that state-mandated information with no basis in scientific fact violates its “religious” beliefs.

Of course the 5 Papists on the SCOTUS didn't ever imagine that religious "liberty" applies to all forms of "religious or spiritual" belief from Islam to Buddhism to Satanism, etc. They only wanted it to apply to you know, Christians.........

I hope the courts are swamped with cases where this employer who is a Taoist wants an exception for this and the Satanists want that.......Let's clog the courts and show the papists exactly what they have done.

Satan, as we generally think of him as a personification of evil opposed to God, probably came into Judaism through a Zoroastrian influence. If anyone is looking for an exact date, it is probably 539 BC, the year the Persians under Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon and ended the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews.

Zoroastrianism is fundamentally a dualist religion with a good, creator God, Ahura Mazda, and an evil, destructive God, Angra Mainyu.

Whether it is suing a "Muslim" corporation to enforce sharia law on its workers, suing a corporation for violating its religious beliefs in engaging in same sex marriage or slavery when merging with another corporation, or the like, it is just a matter of time.

And that might be the best damn way to force a split in the Republican base on whether to support what the likes of Roberts and those on the court that continue to make these judicial activist decisions or to want them impeached. As long as they are able to just hear cases that split "normally" on the side of Democratic/progressive base and their own base, they may be safe. But Hobby Lobby leaves the door open to split the corporatists interests and the right wing extremist base in a big way, which may be our pathway to getting rid of one or more of them and change the balance of the court. I think Ruth Bader Ginsburg is hoping that she sees one of those cases come up before she feels the need to retire and take herself off of that 4 person voting minority that can get the court to hear such cases.

Re: State mandated informed consent documents

Dear [Health Care Provider]:

As an adherent to the principles of the Satanic Temple, my sincerely held religious beliefs are:

• My body is inviolable and subject to my will alone.

• I make any decision regarding my health based on the best scientific understanding of the world, even if the science does not comport with the religious or political beliefs of others.

• My inviolable body includes any fetal or embryonic tissue I carry so long as that tissue is unable to survive outside my body as an independent human being.

• I, and I alone, decide whether my inviolable body remains pregnant and I may, in good conscience, disregard the current or future condition of any fetal or embryonic tissue I carry in making that decision.

As you know, your medical treatment of me requires my informed consent. My informed consent is based solely on scientifically true and accurate information that is relevant to my decisions regarding my health and pregnancy in accordance with my sincerely held religious beliefs.

I regard any information required by state statute to be communicated or offered to me as a precondition for an abortion (separate and apart from any other medical procedure) is based on politics and not science ("Political Information&quot . I regard Political Information as a state sanctioned attempt to discourage abortion by compelling my consideration of the current and future condition of my fetal or embryonic tissue separate and apart from my body. I do not regard Political Information to be scientifically true or accurate or even relevant to my medical decisions. The communication of Political Information to me imposes an unwanted and substantial burden on my religious beliefs.

My informed consent is based solely on information you provide which, in the exercise of your independent medical judgment, is materially relevant to my health (excluding the present or future condition of any fetal or embryonic tissue inside my body) and is scientifically true and accurate. My informed consent is not based on Political Information.

This letter constitutes my acknowledgment that you have offered Political Information to me. I reject that Political Information because it offends my sincerely held religious beliefs. Please attach this letter to any forms you are required to keep regarding my informed consent.

The doctor-patient relationship is built on trust. I trust that you will honor my religious beliefs and keep me fully and accurately informed of my health based on science, not politics. I further trust that you will not deny me medical care because of any inconvenience my religious beliefs may cause to your ability to provide me with your best independent medical judgment.

Sincerely,

SheilaT

All that need be done if for lower courts to keep upholding the rights of these believers to oppose such laws based on Hobby Lobby. If enough women send in such letters and cause enough problems, and enough media hype, it will be difficult for states to maintain such laws even if, eventually, the Supreme Court says such is null-and-void. And when they do pull out of their ass that such religions can't oppose such laws, well, that'll boomerang, too, in the other direction. Win-win
