(53,339 posts)For Scorp, I was referring specifically to the Ferguson discussions there. I know he's a regular on Discussionist and loves to play--and he's very good at it. But I don't know how he manages to to take all the ugly stuff that must be coming up there now.
I've looked over there a few times, and while it might be fun to play I've got my hands full just keeping up with DU!
But seriously, considering the two sites, I just feel the time I spend here is more productive for me.

(62,276 posts)Every time I go there I get called for jury duty, doesn't matter how long I've been away, probably because of so much crap being alerted on and being left and the jury pool being taxed, etc...
Scorp is my hero though and scheming_daemons too, I think they're the only high profile DUers I recognize over there laying down the smackdown.

(73,631 posts)And B. I know that they have no idea what they're talking about.
To me, they're harmless and they pretty much loath dealing with me.
I know them better than they know themselves.

(62,276 posts)But good on you for trying, man. I signed up there but can't stand to read it.

(73,631 posts)They represent an entire segment of this country, that I know actually exists, but I have never experienced. A good many of these people are ruralized northerners who rarely interact with people unlike themselves. They feel threatened by different cultures and ethnicities, however they think that their prejudices and stereotypes can accurately explain people whom they know nothing about.
I spent a good part of my life living down south, and my entire time there I never met one white southerner who seemed upset to be reminded that this country has more than just white people in it.
They're afraid, ignorant and resentful and they're politically involved. These are the fact kind of people that I need to know more about.
The great thing about them is that they love to blab. It's not that hard at all to get them to admit how fucked up they are. It's just that they're the last people to ever see it.

(62,276 posts)I come from a background where it's fairly common (family of racists, brought up and lived down south, etc). So it really doesn't surprise me. But I can't put up with it because it gets me so emotional and I'd just get hides. My few posts over there have been quite difficult to keep a calm tone and not tell them off (not using my name there, glad I didn't choose to do that, want no association with that place).
The sad thing about southerners, they hide it in public, but my mom, she posts anonymously on Yahoo! and has been banned several times. I myself probably have latent ideas but I've suppressed them 100%, it's hard to grow up in that atmosphere and realize just how shitty your background is. The last time and this is the first time I've ever told anyone, but the last time, almost two decades ago, when I was still a kid practically, I called a black guy something stupid and I thought it was normal to say that and he called me out. "Boy." That was when I realized that I was influenced by the racism in my family and ignorant of it.
And that's why I have had on occasion bashed southerners, I don't mean to be mean to them or stereotype, but I lived there, and I know the culture, and it's all sort of sly how the racism happens. Only an ignorant kid who has no fucking clue would say the stuff in private in public to some stranger, etc. Otherwise it's hidden.
The only good thing about Discussionist and basically internet anonymity is that we get to see what our society is really like. People say the shit they'd normally say in private, publicly, and we can see where their tendencies are.
Best wishes scorp and like I said to pinboy, you are my discussionist hero, I hope you give yourself a break every now and again, though, toxic stuff will get to you eventually.

(73,631 posts)This coming weekend I'm going to a family reunion and I really won't give a fuck what my racist friends are up to.
I'm gonna recharge and jump back in when I'm good and ready.
I'm sure that they're gonna miss me too.

(53,056 posts)Wow. I can't imagine what your mom posted to earn that.
What you say about the internet bringing to light what has been hidden, I think that's true, but there is another dimension to it. They get reinforcement for their bigoted views, which only fuels them and influences others. I think that is in part why there has been such a growth of MRA ideology.
I find myself wondering what percentage of the population thinks that way. Is it a minority, a majority? How do we know?
joshcryer
(62,276 posts)What she said was actually quite tame but I guess the red flags add up over time and once you hit a threshold you get banned.
My mom thinks it's funny. Mind you she's a nice person openly to people but her private opinions are quite, shall we say, different.

(53,056 posts)I vacillate between fury and feeling sick to my stomach when I have a look at their posts. Little wonder cops get away with killing unarmed black males when people think that way.

(58,237 posts)lest you be accused of "race baiting." I just saw that accusation in another thread. It appears we have a member who is tired of hearing that we white people can take a more active role in the fight against racism.
White people this & white people that..... all it does is divide us
MrScorpio
(73,631 posts)The truth is that I love that shit.
Besides, if I can handle myself amongst that gaggle of right wing bigots on the Discussionist, anything that I'm up against here will be a piece of pie.
