http://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/trayvon-martins-mother-pens-letter-michael-browns-familyI hate that you and your family must join this exclusive yet growing group of parents and relatives who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence, Martins mother Sybrina Fulton wrote in a letter published online late Monday by Time magazine. The 20 Sandy Hook children. Jordan Davis. Oscar Grant. Kendrick Johnson. Sean Bell. Hadya Pendleton. The Aurora shooting victims. The list is too numerous to adequately mention them all, Fulton says in the letter....
Further complicating the pain and loss in this tragedy is the fact that the killer of your son is alive, known, and currently free. In fact, he is on paid administrative leave, Fulton says of Wilson, the white, six-year police force veteran who shot and killed Brown....
While we fight injustice, we will also hold ourselves to an appropriate level of intelligent advocacy, she says. If they refuse to hear us, we will make them feel us.
Hopefully it won't get to the point where there are enough moms of slain black kids out there to form a support group.

I hope that Travyon Martin and Michael Brown are the bookend events that force America to grapple with gun violence, the NRA, the police state mentality, and the horrible inequality that so plagues our country.
But, as I type this opinion, those in power are doing everything in there power to soothe the public's anger and preserve the status-quo.

(182,868 posts)I can't imagine having to write or receive that letter. I can't believe that letters such as this have to be written.
My daughter was also out of school sick on December 14, 2012. I remember that we were doing about what we are now - watching SpongeBob while I goofed around on DU and did chores - and I kept seeing this thing about a shooting. Later in the afternoon I actually clicked on one of the links or hit a google news item and was horrified. I am not even sure that's how it went.
I just can't imagine. I can empathize but I just can't imagine.
