General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTime out for a nice story. My gf's new boss just handed her a thousand bucks.
After a year out of work, she started a new job yesterday. (it is a very small business that manages pension funds for building trades unions, so they are pretty cool people) Today her boss handed her $1000 and said "you are probably having some cash flow issues after being out of work so long. This is to help out until payday."

(5 posts)Was it an advance on her first paycheck? If so they will reduce it from her net pay in two weeks.
If cash and over $50, it is taxable income. Sounds like no taxes were withheld. I am sure you do not want your gf breaking any laws, correct? So she will need to report the income either way right?
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)First, according to the IRS, it is the donor who is responsible for reporting and paying the tax on any cash gifts.
Second, gifts up to $14,000 are excluded from that tax. Not $50.

(1,357 posts)I am the g/f. I was so touched when my boss made the offer I nearly burst into tears! I have always worked at medium to large companies so I never experienced such generosity from the owner before. In addition to the cash, he also provides lunch for the employees every week. The office is attached to their home and another perk is the use of their gorgeous pool. Although it's only a temp job filling in for a maternity leave, I sure hit the jackpot! After such a long time of rejection and lost hope, I really appreciated the kindness.
And thanks for all the support from you guys too! You're da bestest!!

(12,958 posts)They cut everyone there's pay by $2 per hour, "because they wanted to make more profit". He said they have religious guys from the owners church there who walk around and pressure you to convert. Sounds very bizarre.
MindPilot
(12,693 posts)The boss is obvious a religious type along the lines of Hobby Lobby; he should be careful because his workers have dangerous power tools.
