(9,748 posts)The more slaves the masters owned, the more representatives in Congress and more electoral votes they received. This increased their political power. But since slaves had no other rights under the Constitution, they decreased this extra political power by 40%.
You, and others like you on DU, have made it abundantly clear that you wish the slave masters extra political power for owning slaves had not been decreased 1%.
Here's a thought: what do you think would happen to efforts at disenfranchisement if we allocated by eligible voters instead of by numbers of residents? Do you think the GOP would still work to disenfranchise voters knowing that this would increase the number of Democratic seats in the House?
Slaves and others not eligible to vote should have counted ZERO rather than 3/5th.

(82,849 posts)The notion that for census and apportionment purposes, slaves only counted toward 3/5 of a person led to a mindset - that persists to this day in many precincts of our country - that black persons were of less worth than white persons. This path led inevitably and inexorably to racist theories promulgated and "justified" by pseudo-scientific and ersatz scholarship (cf. The Bell Curve for an example of the ongoing nature of this pernicious lie), and treated as a serious topic to this day.
The idea that the one and only consideration to the abhorrent 3/5 rule is the political power of the slaveholder, a power that hasn't been in existence for more than a century and a half, is to conjure a fake concern to supersede present reality.
As for your "Here's a thought" paragraph, you would have to do some serious amending of the Constitution to deny citizenship and exclude from the census persons ineligible to vote. It's another fake concern.

(9,748 posts)I have never heard anyone use the 3/5th rule to justify their racism. Though if I searched, I'd bet I'd find some. And they probably only heard of it because of progressives bemoaning the horrors of the rule in the first place. Given that 99% of Americans probably don't even know it exists, it would obviously not be a cause of much racism.
The simple truth is, a lot of people had a knee jerk reaction to the rule. If they thought it out, they should recognize that the rule was put in place by people opposed to slavery and, as such, was a good thing. But then you run those who can or will not.
1. It's a simple talking point as long as nobody thinks it through. And some people hate to give up a talking point.
2. Some progressives really do fit the rightwing stereotype of the wimpy liberal and can not view things dispassionately. See any anti-war thread for dozens of such examples.
3. It took me a long time, but I have finally accepted that half the people in the world can not follow a logical train of thought. They can understand, "it says they are 3/5th of a person," but the math of that equation actually hurting slavers and helping slaves is something they just can't get.
4. Lots of people, regardless of ideology, will never admit they are wrong. Ever. They get defensive and that is that.
That last bunch is particularly annoying to those of us who really are never wrong.

We have a system that says one person deserves to live longer than another, simply by virtue of the money they have.
