STOP
1. if it is over money, you can ALWAYS get more money
2. if it is depression, dont take a permanent solution to a temporary problem, please

(11,804 posts)sometimes things just are the way they are.
I don't get suicidal thoughts that often (thank goodness) but there's a logic to them.

(22,497 posts)levels go up once your medication starts working. Maybe you learn to not care about things that used to make you unhappy.
Everything changes.

(16,286 posts)I dont have clinical depression, I can only ask those who do to not take this final step, please.

(442 posts)I've always hated that saying...
#1 - I think it's not helpful calling it a solution at all.
#2 - Who doesn't want a permanent solution to their problems? Even if my problem is only temporary, of course I want to permanently solve it.
I've always thought that saying was not as clever as it tries to be.

(22,165 posts)My best friend of 45 years (we met when we were 5), killed herself.
I still grieve her loss and probably always will.
Other than saying that, "I got nothing"

(153,193 posts)that kind of simplistic thinking is very insulting to people who really understand severe depression - it's not a matter of JUST DON'T DO THAT or YOU CAN GET SOME MONEY
I did edit to make less rough

(22,497 posts)It may have just saved a life.
I know depression is a complicated and often hard thing to treat and to deal with. For me though saying things like, "this will pass" has helped me in emergency situations and I appreciate learning it.

(153,193 posts)it's not helped by simplistic thinking
the best advice is to have them seek professional help, not being told you can just "get more money" or your problems are temporary

(16,286 posts)kill themselves over money, take the 20's depression, happened a lot and there is such anxiety now with the economy I would suspect it could happen again.

(22,497 posts)simplistic sayings can help. I know because it has happened to me many times.
I agree that money does not help. Poverty seems like it would make it worse though. And I agree that the person should seek professional help, I certainly did and it saved my life.
I think we agree on most things.

(68,918 posts)If it were only as simple as those words you have written:
1. My husband would be alive...
2. I wouldn't be posting this.
Please think before you think you are doing good. I have watched people think they are doing good for going on about 8 days now.

(12,778 posts)shows that you really don't know anything about depression or about people considering suicide. It's insulting and minimizes a complex situation that is unique for everyone.
