You Should Avoid These Right-Wing Companies

Note to moderators: entire list shared with permission

http://samuel-warde.com/2014/08/avoid-these-right-wing-companies/

As we discussed in our recent article, 4 Ways You Can Effectively Fight Conservatives, there are many things we can do to combat their agenda. We can work to advocate truthfulness, avoid television stations that air conservative Super PAC propaganda. WE can support candidates facing elections against right-wing candidates…

And we can boycott boycott boycott right-wing companies whose products and services help fund the conservative agenda and candidates.

For your convenience, here is a list of but a few of those companies we should avoid. Be sure to share with your family and friends. This is by no means a fully comprehensive list, but it is a good beginning.

As some of you noted, companies like Hobby Lobby and Papa John’s are good ones to avoid as well – however, this list is focused more on larger operations such as those by News Corp and Koch Industries as you can see below.

Wed Aug 20, 2014, 06:39 AM
Aug 2014

This was the first time I have seen National Geo on a list of RW companies therefore NAT Geo is now verboten in my household and has been blocked permanently.

True Story, if anyone really cares, a few years ago my SIL came to visit, the guest room in the house has a TV in it, the next AM my SIL asked why Fox will not work on the TV even though it is listed as a channel that is available. I told her FOX or any other RW Propaganda Network or RW product is not allowed in this house. Well she though blocking channels was extreme, yet she has been quoting "Dr" Laura for years, and said I should unblock it for her. I told her the Hampton Inn is 5 miles away has availability and Fox on the TV, I will be more then happy to drive you there if you would like. She stayed 1 more night then cut her trip short by a few days. She has never stayed at our house again. win-win if ya ask me.

Thanks for the list of what to avoid.

It's very difficult not to do business with conservatives. Do we research every company, every restaurant, every doctor's office, etc. that we consider using?

Some companies are on my 'no way, no how' list like Chick-fil-a and Hobby Lobby. Others are on my 'last resort' list (I seriously needed a toilet plunger in the middle of the night once and Wal-mart was the only open store that had one!)

I won't miss Star Wars Ep. VII when it hits - and it's from 20th Century Fox.

and I don't, I would need a television that would allow for a connection to the computer. I still have a console television from the 80's and it works fine so I don't want to get rid of it.

But.....if I were to have a TV that the computer could somehow be hooked to, I would have no idea how to do the connection. That is how low-tech I am. I wouldn't know if I needed a cable, or what kind of cable, or if there is a special channel you have to put on the TV to allow it to work. Let's put it this way, people who know about technology don't think it is a big deal, but I was given a cell phone a few months ago for work, and I couldn't turn it on because I didn't know that you had to hold the "power" button down for several seconds---I just kept pushing it and the phone would not turn on. A no-brainer to you, huh?

I use a system called Roku (it's about as large as a deck of cards) and it comes with every kind of hook-up that you would need. If your TV has a red/white/yellow hook-up on the back...you're good to go.

btw: console TV...that's like a blast from the past man. It's been awhile since I've had one or have even seen one. I'm sure the kids in those stores wouldn't know much about such an antiquated instrument. But I would imagine that those tubes might be one of the things that might throw them for a moment, and besides, it wouldn't have the red/yellow or white connections on it either.

And here we have, what...another 30 or more?

I too choose not to live my life this way. And yes, because it's too damned difficult at my age to remember all of that shit. And who the hell wants to (seriously) keep a notebook full of all the products and places we, as "good DUers", should not patronize?

Are people still boycotting BP?

Papa John's pizza?

Coke? Madea? Toyota? Goodwill? Staples?

Are people stepping up and boycotting everything they're supposed to, or is this just the latest shiny object du jour, meant only to make people feel like they're actually doing something constructive?

I'm sure these company's contribute—some heavily in their own way—to the right-wing. The agenda of the right is more and more clear to me these days—use the public airwaves to manipulate, control and misdirect the public. Then use democracy to hire politicians who will use their power to further the cause of corporate profit. Where's the investment in people and their future, wheres the safety net, wheres the court system, EPA, FDA that protects us, it's all about to be run over!

My needs and means are pretty minimal at this age anyway. Grow a lot of my own food, buy used goods most of the time except for curbside vintage, etc. Had to give up going to auctions because I always came home with great stuff that I still don't really need, and the house is crammed full already. Recently snagged a huge mahogany desk curbside that's too big to fit through my narrow doors (old house, bought at auction) so now it's on my porch serving as a big plant stand.

Time to quit!

33. A note on Harper Collins

That includes the following publishers that are under the HC umbrella: Hachette, Holtzbrinck/Macmillan, Penguin Putnam, Random House, and Simon & Schuster.

Unfortunately I was at Powell's in Portland a couple weeks ago and bought three books that fall under HC. One of them is Lawrence Lessig's book Republic Lost. The other two were about North Korea.

I've been going to school for 4 years and MacMillan is one of the biggest publishers of textbooks.

I do watch film and tv programs that are on those channels, but alas I get them for free (not on Hulu). The same with books for the most part.

I think people can try as hard as they can not to buy or use products from that list, but it is near impossible to avoid everyone. Technically if you turn on your tv and watch a movie that is part of your cable subscription you are contributing money to one of them. Probably the best you can hope for is 85-90% if you are really careful.

36. Don't boycott too much

I avoid Koch products like the plague, but I don't plan on boycotting all 20th Century Fox material. I think that if you set your standards too high, you'll inevitably fail because you're only human. Plus, you'll miss out on great shows that may not agree with what their owners want to peddle, like the Simpsons and Family Guy.

If you really want to boycott something, boycott Coors. The Coors company has been funding ultra-right-wing groups for over a century, the supported apartheid and they helped create the Heritage Foundation. Ban that!

And I wouldn't drink Coors products (bar maybe Blue Moon) even if they weren't insane right-wingers. Coors Light might as well be freaking donkey piss.

The TV part was the easiest though, as every single entry is programming I don't watch anyway, and I care fuck-all about sports.

Even if they weren't rightwing - they suck. Probably most/all of them do.

I got rid of cable, plus I'm a graduate student in class during the evening. With Hulu I still get to watch new episodes of shows like Modern Family and Parks & Rec on the weekend.

I use Adblock Plus to block the advertising revenue the 2% would otherwise get from me. I've heard site managers scold their users for having it, because it takes food out of their mouths.

Lots of the others you have listed are blocked on my gateway already.

Keep these lists coming!!!

53. The only prob I have is FOX when they are the ONLY channel carrying the NFL game.

I cant really afford the $100 to subscribe to the NFL network, and when FOX wins the contract, they are the only channel that broadcasts the NFL Games. I moved to the south many years ago (job transfer) but I still never miss my Pgh. Steelers. Thats the ONLY time I ever watch anything FOX, but I wont give up my Steelers.

14 of those are on FOX. This is pretty much true for all 32 teams.

Football season starts in three weeks.

I make 80% of our clothing, and it's almost impossible to get certain fabrics without some lycra/spandex, especially knits. Tights are especially bad, and without it, they just don't work.

On the other hand, I tend to buy my fabrics at deep discount on the secondary market, and I do have a deep stash from which to work for a while.

An alternative to tights... That will take some thought.

I have always avoided Dunkin' Donuts because they were owned by Carlyle. Besides they pay their workers minimum wage. I'd prefer to get my coffee from a bodega or street cart and support a local small business.

There are some products I am not going to give up. NFL, Nat Geo, some 20th Century Fox shows. Other than those I'm good, but I won't stop doing something I really enjoy because I don't agree with this company's positions, all I'm really doing is punishing myself.

76. "Married...with Children" was on the Fox network but is a Sony show.
Wed Aug 20, 2014, 08:19 PM
Aug 2014

In its original run, it was owned by Embassy Television and later Columbia Pictures Television; Sony now owns syndication rights to the show.

If you don't want to put money in Rupert Murdoch's pockets, fine. Just make sure you know what shows Fox actually owns the rights to. Fox stopped profitting off Married...with Children in 1997, haha.

Fox network shows that are not actually produced by Fox studios include: Living Single, Fringe, and Beverly Hills, 90210.

I think it's kind of a stretch to boycott Fox entertainment just to say no to Fox News.

If you own a car, a cell or smart phone, kitchen and household appliances, led lighting, medical equipment, a laptop or desk top computer, LED lighting, solar or wind equipment the list is very long because......

Koch owns Molex which is a worldwide supplier of electrical parts to a huge number of industries. The brand name list on the Molex website is huge.

You just can't get away!!
