And Ryan Devereaux, who was arrested last night for being a reporter, says that the cops keep charging into the groups of peaceful protesters, pointing weapons at them and terrifying them.
The various police forces of the area have revealed themselves to the entire world. They are so used to getting away with their abuse of power, so habituated to brutalizing innocent people, that they can't even stop themselves when the whole world is watching!
I also suspect they still have not adjusted to the fact that everyone has a camera and a video camera now, and everyone has a way to get stories out to the entire world.
What idiots. (And the politicians are not any better.)

A question. Johnson was pointedly ignoring Pools attempts to speak to him, and that is when that good ol boy cop came charging at him and his cameraman and cussing at them.
The cops are always so nasty, yelling and cursing at everyone. They never think to be polite and respectful, no matter how respectful and well-behaved the people are that they are yelling at. Its digusting.

So shoot me. I'm guilty of understatement by describing the cops behavior as behaving badly. I'm also guilty of being overly generous in describing your behavior as misrepresentation.
Edited to add: The photographer is guilty of similar hysteria in shouting out that the cop was "trying to kill him".
951-Riverside
(7,234 posts)Are trying to start a debate over whether he has his finger on the trigger.
I've been down this road for far too long, everytime a cop is shown violating someone's rights on video there is always some bootlicker or badge bunny nitpicking over minutia.
A cop could be caught on video pulling a baby out of a car, slamming it to the ground and pepper spraying it but there will be some bootlicking POS trying start a debate over why there wasn't a car seat in the vehicle. and of course when confronted they'll respond with some variation of:
"I'm not taking sides here",
"I hate the police as much as the next guy but... (I think they're awesome)." or
"Pretty stupid of the parent to put their child in that situation"
People like this are mentally ill and unfortunately many are police officers or married to one. Its just a sick sad degenerate culture that is infesting law enforcement.
pablo_marmol
(2,375 posts)I can't possibly be trying to start a debate on whether he had his finger on the trigger because there can be no debate on whether or not he did for the reason I pointed out. Video doesn't lie.
And it's really quite laughable for you to lob this out when you were the one who followed one bald-faced falsehood with another! I made it VERY clear in my original post that I wasn't defending this cop. Yet you dishonorably try to establish that I am simply because I have the temerity to point out your prevarication. Not just a swing and miss, but a wild one.
The real head-scratcher here is why you felt you needed to "embellish" in the first place, given the fact that this cop was so completely out of control! There is always a political price to be paid when our team brazenly and unapologetically lies, or makes blind assumptions. And THAT is what I find the most objectionable in your posts -- which is why I felt compelled to correct you. Then there is the predictable passive-aggressive smear that you can neatly sidestep by (possibly) claiming that you weren't calling me a "bootlicking badge bunny".
I've been down this road for far too long.....
As have I. I'm done with folks who lump all cops into the category of "jack-booted thugs." I have a good friend who's a detective in my county's sex crimes division. Great human being and a STAUNCH Democrat. I work as an armed guard, and I too am a staunch Democrat.

Its not too hard to come to the conclusion that you're either a cop, ex-cop, related to one and/or married to one although I'm actually surprised that you kinda sorta admitted to it and proved the point that I made earlier.
For anyone new to this, what you're seeing here is part of the cop cult-like culture or "brotherhood" (if you will), they will nitpick, play word games, argue and debate over minutia online in order to drive any valid discussion about police abuse off the rails. I've been following police abuse cases for a LOOOONG time and people like this always show up.
The name of the game is Lie, Deny, and Deflect. This is pure unadulterated mental illness, it is a sickness permeating law enforcement and these people have no business anywhere near a gun let alone have any authority over people.
Hopefully these protests will lead to reform that drives the aggressive cult-like brotherhood culture out of law enforcement because if it doesn't we're all in big trouble.
End of discussion.

(18,186 posts)these cops wanna bash heads but the media presence makes that impossible.
They will go home another night and cry themselves to sleep, after tucking their fancy ammo pouches and cammo drool bibs under their pillows.
Yes, it's obvious who the real thugs and crazies are in Missouri, and it's not the people protesting the execution of an unarmed 18-year-old.
The cops over there are like rabid dogs. Drug test every one of them.

That's the front line of good an evil, right there. And day by day, any respect I had for Ron Johnson is fading away. As long as that line of commandos stands there, they know that some stupid idiot will step up and throw that bottle of H2O.
Another thing I have seen the pigs do this week is use the tactic of "caging." They pin people into an area by surrounding them and then tell them to disperse or go home. When the protester tries to comply with the order to go home or disperse, they can't because they are fenced in.
Today's a big day, folks. All this shit could come to an end, if they throw Wilson's ass in jail where it belongs.

(65,336 posts)a tactic Republicans use to challenge registered voters in order to suppress their votes.
The word "caging" certainly does make sense as a description of what cops do when kettling protesters, but since we also use "caging" for that illegal yet widely used Republican voter suppression tactic, I think maybe we should stick with the Britishism "kettlin" for this particular violation of our First Amendment rights.
Of course, both tactics are disgusting attacks on our constitutionally guaranteed rights.

(65,336 posts)Wilson, because we need to protest the continual abuse of African Americans' civil rights, the frequency of police brutality and abuse of rights against all citizens, and the pervasive the militarization of the police.
This could be the beginning of both an African American Spring and an American Spring generally, an extension of the OWS effort.
It should also be combined with voter registration drives everywhere and a massive GOTV effort in November.

(10,597 posts)... on the big day, i.e. the day that the Grand Jury was to begin it's deliberations and the day AG Holder was visiting the city, I can see that this is indeed going to be a long drawn-out process. And you and I both know that before it is decided, there's going to be more killings of innocent black men, be they young, middle-aged or elderly. We're sitting on a tender box. And if they indeed acquit that cop, this societal tinder box will be ignited. I remember the night MLK, Jr was killed. I remember when that verdict came back on Rodney King. There's just so much a people can take.

(85,988 posts). . .nothing like actually tweeting in the thick of it like these folks did, of course.
I had turned off the live feed because it was such a calm and satisfying sight that I wanted to record just how peaceful it had been with the police out of sight (mostly, they were guarding the McDonald's of all places. Whatever, I thought).
Almost as soon as I was getting some accounts down of just how special a night it had been with these amazingly dedicated and committed youth and others sticking to the sidewalk and marching for hours on end, when someone threw a plastic water bottle. That's all it took for the police to mobilize against them.
What I found notable was the way in which the police pushed those who were resting in a parking lot - a spot which had been a refuge ALL night for demonstrators to rest and catch their breath, get water and food, etc. - lined up an pushed everyone into the street. Then they began ordering protestors out of the street they pushed them in.
Demonstrators then formed a circle in that same general parking area and, after asking whatever police they were able for permission, began to pray together. At the end of the prayer, one man announced through a bullhorn that their demonstration was over and they would meet the next morning at another location. At that, most of the demonstrators started for their cars and many left.
The prayer circle seemed to agitate the police even more. They mobilized and lined up opposite the PRESS area. Several reporters began taking pictures; several were threatened at the point of guns to stop recording. There were several strobe lights held by officers lined up in riot gear opposite the press area to block the shots of their aggression. It was an futile, but an amazingly unconstitutional act. I couldn't believe what I was seeing in the images and what was being recorded by these very prominent members of the press and also some public officials like Patricia Bynes, Democratic Committeewoman of Ferguson Township in St Louis County in MO; A delegate for MO's 1st Congressional District; who was hemmed in with the besieged press.
The mostly young protesters who were left (not more than minutes after the prayers) quickly moved into the press area. for god sakes, it was the only place they were allowed to go. Older members of the demonstrating group quickly moved in between the line of police in riot gear who had lined up opposite the press area as if to attack and they held hands in a line and turned their backs to police to provide a barrier against the imminent assault.
That's when all hell broke loose. The police began yelling for the press too disperse. Where were they going to go? They were hemmed in on all sides. The police then began to rush in to the press area and extract youth who didn't appear to be threatening at all. The police ordered the press to move to one place and many did. The young and old demonstrators moved right along with them for protection, PLEADING with the press to not abandon them To the media's credit, they stayed right with them.
The police then ordered the press to move back to where they were, in an obvious effort to shake them off from the demonstrators seeking refuge among them from the rifles and batons and the mace that was being sprayed now indiscriminately at completely innocent protestors. The officers would rush into the press crowd with their rifles pointed directly at the non-threatening crowd and pick out young people and arrest them in the most violent way imaginable; face down on the concrete with their feet in their backs.
Reporters, photogs, and others who were incredibly there as human rights and legal observers were also slammed to the ground at gunpoint and arrested. At one point, police were literally throwing this one black man against a low metal fence until it gave way then they pushed whoever was gathered there into and violently over that metal barrier; many unable to get over it without effort or injury.
After it became clear that the crowd wasn't resisting and was scattered here and there, the police began to dissemble their assaults as well . . . but not until after they had perpetrated the most egregious, arbitrary, and unnecessarily violent assault on an American-based media that I think I've ever witnessed or even heard of.
I think this pic taken from an instagram vid says it all . . . it's a shot of one of the rights observers under a riot policeman's boot with a gun to his head

RT @akjohnson1922: That green hat reads National Guild Lawyer, which is a legal observer. #Ferguson http://instagram.com/p/r6K-lJALeX/
Ryan J. Reilly, who re-tweeted that, was on the scene during the melee and is a Justice Reporter for HuffPost. He made this comment to Politico on his own role there:
" . . . the media have a tendency to protect their own, which can result in disproportional coverage of journalists. Media personalities are also better known than the average citizen, and readers have the expectation that they can be trusted, he said.
I definitely didnt come down here planning on becoming a part of this story I would have been much happier staying out of it. But that wasnt really a choice I had, because I was locked up, said Reilly. As a reporter, youre in the midst of it, and your presence is obviously going to have an impact.
He added, Its tough to imagine how much worse the treatment must be for those who arent in the media, who dont have that platform that we in the media do. Obviously, our story doesnt compare to what other people have gone through.
I can't help but well-up with great emotion at that thought and sentiment. I really don't know what's going on in my country - in Ferguson - and what we can do to make this stop immediately and to protect these youth and others right to assemble and protest without this police brutality and repression. Those aren't just catchphrases in Ferguson anymore. They are a reality that we are all witnessing, seemingly helpless to make it stop. I'm almost undone by it. Almost, but not yet.
(I'm going to repost this as soon as I can wipe away these damn tears)
