Family says man beaten, shot over mixed-race grandchildren

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime." This is a WLBT news exclusive.

Craig Wilson's sister says Craig was brutally attacked by a relative for allowing his mixed race grandchildren to stay at his home over the weekend.

The family tells us his stepson, with his son, came to Wilson's property screaming racist remarks at the family. The stepson, Jeff Daniels, and Craig Wilson allegedly got into a heated argument over his grandchildren. The family claims they threatened him, then beat him before shooting Wilson in the stomach.

They classify the incident as a hate crime.

"Yes they called him some severe names and then they told him to leave and they chased him off his porch around his house and beat him with brass knuckles and shot him with his own gun," said Julie Wilson, the victim's sister.

The mother of the three children remains distraught that her father is fighting for his life. Laura Runnels said

"It's just really hard to deal with right now," said Runnels. Runnels is Wilson's daughter. She is white. The father of the children is black. He declined to go on camera and talk with us.

According to the family, the threats to keep the mixed race grandchildren away have been ongoing, and two weeks ago the family found a cross burning in their yard.

at the link, little has changed there since 1865.

A cross burning, ferchrissakes! Beating up and shooting your father because your sister had kids with a black man?

After reading this, one would almost think the stuff going down in Ferguson is child's play.

about the vicious white backlash against liberated slaves that happened with the failure of Reconstruction in the South.

As I was reading it, Obama, of course, had become President. What struck me as I read this book and heard the contemporary racist reactions to our first African-American President was just how little things have changed.

not a hate crime......

Daniels wears the expression of a man who graduated fifth grade.

And never made it back for sixth.

When you're stupid you must find something to hate more than you hate yourself. The brain gets bored when you never use it.

For Daniels, it's easy. Lots of hatin' goin' on in Mississippi.

"Ah may be a aignorant mow-runn, but at least I'ze one hunnerd percint WHITE11111!!!!!"

He termed me a traitor to my race and said they'd be coming for people like me first... So they are only following true to form. Any white person who doesn't follow their rules is subject to death.

How brutal this crime was and how terrifying this must be for those grandchildren whose sweet faces are shown at the link. The grandfather was being loyal to his children, and this is what happens. The guy who shot him and those that burned that cross must be held to account.

And such cruelty, making a gutshot at an old man. That's something one does not recover from, even if they live. What should have been a time of family comfort, turned into a nightmare.

I hope this gets a lot of attention to shame those who hate blacks so much they will kill anyone else who doesn't go along with them, when they are so in the wrong to hate!

I've only had to deal with KKKers on occasion, and they practice on whites first, in case anyone doesn't know. They are not a political movement, they are an organized crime operation and extortionists. An elderly ranching widow in my rural community who I knew well, refused to give into them.

So they set a bomb to ignite her huge combine, and it was only by luck that the young man she'd hired to drive it that day escaped being killed. He'd jumped off to get something as it warmed up and then it exploded. We all knew what was going on, she'd resisted their demands for money.

I'm tired of hearing them referred to as anything but what they really are - gangsters, terrorists. They should get the same kind of treatment.

Unfortunately, this is not being called a hate crime by authorities:

"He told everybody that he would die for his children and to him the grandchildren are like his and he almost paid the price this weekend," said Wilson.

Wilson says this is a hate crime, but the sheriff doesn't agree.

"We are because there was a cross burning previously, two weeks ago that police were called to but there was no incident report filed with Smith county and we still have the cross," added Wilson.

The Sheriff says Jeff Daniels has been released on $20-thousand dollars bond. Daniels was charged with aggravated assault. The Sheriff says this is not a "hate crime" under state law.  The investigation is ongoing.

A man who tried to murder the grandfather is out on bail. It sends a bad message to the community that a savage, premeditiated beating and attempted murder was allowed bail. Most states don't allow such a dangerous person bail, if nothing else, to protect the victim or family.

Just think of the terror of the family now that he is out of jail.

Mississippi, you can do better than this.

And they are all over the USA in different municipalities. I did take a look at the darling grandbabies. What kind of effing judge would not set a high bail on that perp and keep him in jail? Daniels damn sure looks like a danger to the public to me.

We need to clean house in this country. Locate these pockets of extreme ancient racism and clean it up. I know. With what? No money. If we could just start with the "authorities". Judges and law enforcement officials. Find out if they are bigots and if they are, then fire them!

Note that the state may not have a hate crimes law as many refused to pass them. The GOP has fought these state by state and federally. But this was passed and they have not been able to repeal it... yet. The 2014 elections may let them do as it is their stated intent to repeal more laws than making any. Which is the another reason they won't do a thing to help the people, economy or anything else that does not directly go into the pockets of their masters.

Who had ever promoted the hate behind this action could be charged as a co-defendant in this crime.

I fully support my tax money keeping these people in prison for life. If you do not understand that your words can create such horrific actions you should not be allowed to speak.

I do not pray much, I do not generally feel the effect, I will pray for Craig Wilson and for his daughter, his grandchildren and their father.
