James Foley beheading suspect probably British, David Cameron says
David Cameron has said it looks "increasingly likely" a man thought to have been involved in a US journalist's beheading is British, as UK police try to confirm the militant's identity...
...Mr Cameron, who returned from holiday to chair emergency meetings with Home and Foreign Office officials, said the killer had not yet been identified but said it was "deeply shocking" that he appeared to be British.
"Let's be clear what this act is - it is an act of murder, and murder without any justification," he told BBC political editor Nick Robinson.
The PM said "far too many" British citizens had travelled to Syria and Iraq to take part in the fighting there and the government would "redouble all our efforts" to stop people going....

And identify what country he departs from in his attempt, if any, to return to the UK.
And scrutinize every passenger coming from that place for possible terrorist infiltrators.

(21,786 posts)London, specifically (probably the East End). The vowels and other features are distinctive. The pronunciation of "against" and "been", for instance, and the velarisation of dark "L" in "result" (so that it sounds almost like "resuwt" ; that last especially is a feature that pretty much conclusively places the accent.

All I am saying is do not jump to conclusions, the evidence is not clear who it is and the source has ulterior motives...to sow the very fear you seem to want.

(21,786 posts)Yes, it's confirmed that some number of Britons are among the extremists fighting in Syria and Iraq. But then there are probably Americans, as well (remember Anwar al-Awlaki?)

(25,406 posts)Yes, the guy could have trained for a year to do a perfect East End accent. Or they could have dubbed a voiceover to the video with editing software, being careful to synchronize the voice and lips precisely.
But, you know, they didn't. Why bother? The dude was from London.
