...but they claimed he came at him with his hand raised with the knife in it. I didn't see that in the video and he wasn't that close to them until they started shooting him; then he started falling down that small hill from being hit by bullets.

An overhand grip is when you have the knife backwards (compared to how you would normally hold a knife)

An overhand grip does not require the knife to be in the air. Perhaps a bad choice of words. Reverse grip is more frequently used and perhaps a bit more clear.

The officers drew their weapons and ordered Powell to stop. He did stop, but then pulled out a knife and came at the officers, gripping and holding it high, Dotson said. They ordered him to stop and drop the knife. When he got within 2 or 3 feet of the officers, they fired, killing Powell.

“This is a lethal range for a knife,” Dotson said.

His right hand was in his pocket, pushing outward against it & he pulled his hand out once the confrontation started. I can't tell if he has something in it or not - but it certainly isn't raised at any point in the confrontation.

cop gently talks him down to the point where it looks as though the man might drop the knife, but instead, he suddenly tightens his grip on it and lunges forward--but the cop has positioned himself with a chair between him and the man, and as the man lunges, the cop thrusts the chair into his legs, knocking him to the floor, and then he and the other two cops pile on to control him and get the knife from him.

However, they never but their knees on his back or neck, never rough him up. The just use their whole bodies to block any aggressive movement from the man in a way that does the minimum of harm to the man himself.

That sort of policing, though, takes time, energy, and training--as well as a desire to help rather than to harm. None of those things are very common in most police departments these days.
