... Anyone who votes for Paul with the hope that he would pursue anything like a "progressive" agenda will be acting stupidly.
Rand Paul is an extremist, right-wing grifter and a member of the Koch brothers wing of the Republican Party. He and his father also have known ties to neo-Confederates.
Rand Paul, like his father, is pure poison.
That is all.

(1,098 posts)The Pauls are hated by many on the right, for a variety of reasons. If he somehow got the GOP nomination, I'd expect very many Republicans to stay at home on election day.

(1,098 posts)Who they end up nominating.
Social conservatives are apprehensive about voting for a libertarian
Libertarians are apprehensive about voting for a social conservative
Both are apprehensive about voting for someone they consider a RINO
What they need is someone who can unify the party, and thankfully, I don't see someone like that among the current list of potential candidates

(53,035 posts)including LGBT Americans, women, and people of color that the Paulbots want to see put back in their "place." You know, when America was good before all that desegregation and equal rights nonsense.
At least we know the only issue some ever had with the 1 percent is that they were not among them. It explains why that term so quickly replaced class analysis. They are more than happy to promote the great champion of capital, of unfettered regulation of Wall Street and big business, and promote polices that generate increasing inequality--as long as they benefit. Ordinary Americans--those who are not white, male, and middle- to upper-middle class don't matter.
Oh, and of course moar guns and more profits for the merchants of death. That's important too. Rail on about militarized police while making sure the merchants of death are unfettered in their pursuit of profit.

(7,960 posts)While the big business wing of the GOP may agree with him on deregulation, it is NOT at all in favor of dismantling the Federal Reserve and by the way they LIKE corporate subsidies very much, thank you.
The Fundamentalist wing of the party will never trust that he is really and truly pro life and more importantly "one of them".
The Neocons are apoplectic about his isolationist tendencies.
That pretty much leaves the libertarian college kids who've just got their first bracing taste of that Ayn Rand philosophy, who want to smoke pot and don't want to end up as cannon fodder and dream of striking it rich some day.
After everyone's done whooping and hollering it will be someone Big Business feels is one of them or at least someone who they feel they can control, someone religious enough to placate the Fundies and who has the knack for stroking the Neocons' erogenous zones without scaring off independent voters.
That's the way it has been. That's the way it will be.

(1,967 posts)I doubt anyone who votes in the republican primary cares much about a progressive result. Those who would vote for him in the general are probably using lesser evil logic not wanting a progressive. There are no progressives in the race if it is Paul vs Clinton.

(24,692 posts)The John Birch Society (JBS) is an American political advocacy group that says it supports anti-communism and limited government. It has been described as radical right. The organization claims to identify with Christian principles, seeks to limit governmental powers, and opposes wealth redistribution, and economic interventionism. It opposes collectivism, totalitarianism, and communism. It opposes socialism as well, which it asserts is infiltrating U.S. governmental administration.
The society opposed the 1960s civil rights movement and claimed the movement had communists in important positions. In the latter half of 1965, the JBS produced a flyer titled "What's Wrong With Civil Rights?", which was used as a newspaper advertisement. In the piece, one of the answers was: "For the civil rights movement in the United States, with all of its growing agitation and riots and bitterness, and insidious steps towards the appearance of a civil war, has not been infiltrated by the Communists, as you now frequently hear. It has been deliberately and almost wholly created by the Communists patiently building up to this present stage for more than forty years." The society opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claiming it violated the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and overstepped individual states' rights to enact laws regarding civil rights. The society opposes "one world government", and it has an immigration reduction view on immigration reform. It opposes the United Nations, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and other free trade agreements. They argue the U.S. Constitution has been devalued in favor of political and economic globalization, and that this alleged trend is not accidental. It cited the existence of the former Security and Prosperity Partnership as evidence of a push towards a North American Union.
The society has been described as "ultraconservative", "far right", and "extremist". The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the society as a "'Patriot' Group".[21] Other sources consider the society as part of the patriot movement. Fred Koch, founder of Koch Industries, was one of the founding members.
The society continues to press for an end to United States membership in the United Nations. As evidence of the effectiveness of JBS efforts, the society points to the Utah State Legislature's failed resolution calling for United States withdrawal, as well as the actions of several other states where the Society's membership has been active. Since its founding, the society has repeatedly opposed United States military intervention overseas, although it is strongly supportive of the American military. It has issued calls to "Bring Our Troops Home" in every conflict since its founding, including Vietnam. The society also has a national speakers' committee called American Opinion Speakers Bureau (AOSB) and an anti-tax committee called TRIM (Tax Reform IMmediately).

(53,035 posts)Is that they are a right-winger who prefer the GOP over the Democratic Party. They likely are looking for a tax cut and to see women, people of color, and LGBT Americans put back in their "place." Paul is their man for that. When people wax nostalgic for an era before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is not even slightly surprising they would support a racist shit bag.
