Another boy genius from Texas. Not news, but worth reposting ...

Perry also did poorly on classes within his animal science major. In fall semester 1970, he received a D in veterinary anatomy, a F in a second course on organic chemistry and a C in animal breeding. He did get an A in world military systems and Improv. of Learning -- his only two As while at A&M.
"A&M wasn't exactly Harvard on the Brazos River," recalled a Perry classmate in an interview with The Huffington Post. "This was not the brightest guy around. We always kind of laughed. He was always kind of a joke."
A spokesperson for the governor recently told the Texas Tribune that the university "helped shape who he is today." The governors office did not return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

That is not a bad requirement for a BS. Should be a requirement in elementary/middle schools today - but sadly is not.

(21,596 posts)I took fencing (really fun & intellectual) and swimming. Then, needing 2 more credits, I signed up for a 2 credit class called "weight training for fitness
Holy moley! I had NO idea what I was in for! The class kicked my butt! It was taught by the strength coach for our SEC championship Division 1 football team. There were about 30 guys & 5 women.
Coach: "Now get over here and lift those weights! What are you? A bunch of grandmothers? GO!"
It was free weights, running laps and diamond push ups. On the last day of class I did 750 diamond push ups! I could dead lift 125 lbs and bench press 95 lbs.
It was an awesome experience. The gym was an unairconditioned 1940s era model. Nowadays, the students have a world class athletic center.
I was in great shape at the end of the 8 week summer quarter!

(10,252 posts)Let me state outright that I'm not a fan of Perry. Never voted for the guy, and I live in TX.
Did it ever occur to you that Perry may have dislexia and/or other learning disabilities? That he stuck with getting a college degree and didn't quit speaks to his credit. Anyone who criticized him for his college record AND didn't earn their own college degree, well just shame on you!
We should be criticizing his political policies, not his long-ago college transcript. A) Who cares? and B) What business is it of yours and mine? Grow up!

(8,923 posts)we need to know that he has a 2.1 grade point average from A&M.
Didn't the republicans go after Obama's transcript at Harvard and
complained that he got preferential trestment?

(4 posts)If he started college in 1968, why didn't he go to Viet Nam first? He likes to get his picture taken with big guns. Why didn't he go to Viet Nam and use one? Another right wing chicken hawk and a dumb one at that!!

(59,504 posts)I started college in 1968. I was from a lower middle class town and slightly less than half of us went to college. There are so many things to criticize Perry on - starting with the fact that he is under indictment, this is not fair.
Not to mention, there are any number of Democrats, as well as Republicans, who did whatever it took to avoid serving in Vietnam. I started college the same year and by the time I graduated far fewer people were being drafted. In addition, many intentionally took jobs where deferments existed. ( Bell Labs, the research arm of AT&T, was able to get them for all hires)
As to the grades, they are horrible - even considering that there has been a HUGE amount of grade inflation in the times since then. Obviously learning and studying was not a priority. What is odd is that his are so low he had to be on the verge of failing out - something that male students than worried about because it could lead them to be drafted.
It was pretty clear in the 2012 debates that he really was not all that smart - even though he likely had memorized answers to generic questions that he could have applied to any question that was at all similar.

(145,554 posts)The indictment of Perry was not a partisan event. The Democrats had nothing to do with that indictment and most Texas Democrats want Perry to do well and be the GOP nominee. Oops would be fun to watch against any Democrat.

(35,730 posts)Are we not entitled to the very best, in every aspect of human achievement? I want someone who is intelligent, can do well in the academic system (even though I personally had problems with it--not good at jumping through hoops here), is articulate, is presentable, has a sense of humor, is diplomatic, and way more than you'd even be interested in reading on this post.
We're talking about the leadership of this country--the top job in the U.S.!
We're entitled to excellence. We should not settle for less in any quarter.
