Redditors Who Viewed JLaw’s Hacked Nude Photos Now Raising Money for Prostate Cancer

For all those people out there who viewed the hacked nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and numerous other celebrities that appeared online over the weekend, there is now a way to absolve yourself of your guilt.

Reddit users have set up a donations page on the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s website where people who viewed the photos can donate money “in honor of” Lawrence and the other celebrities. So far, the campaign, which has been promoted on the subreddit dedicated to the leak called “The Fappening,” has raised more than $6,000:

The joke, according to some of the Redditors donating to the cause is that since masturbation can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer, Lawrence has done her part to support the cause in the past.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Reddit group is the top fundraiser for the PCF’s Safeway Foundation $1 Million Matching Grant Challenge.

Prostate Cancer Foundation Response Statement to Reddit Post
September 2, 2104 -- A post appeared on Reddit late Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014. A Reddit user directed other Reddit users to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation without the Foundation’s knowledge. We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner. Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with our own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post.

I wish they'd kept the money; they need it and I don't believe, as someone who has worked in fundraising/development in the past, that they have any obligation to return the funds morally or legally. They didn't ask a bunch of assholes to donate to them, have anything to do with the inception of the idea or campaign, or do anything to promote it. They're certainly free to make the decision they did...I would have kept the money donated while pulling the plug on future donations and denouncing the campaign.

Minimally, I hope someone else writes them a $6K check to honor that they did not allow themselves to be used in this way. Prostate cancer is one of those things that could be cured in the near-future and research into it could have wider anti-cancer outcomes in terms of curing disease. Also, fuck cancer.

or would trying to get them to relate to flesh-and-blood non-celebrity women be too drastic of a transition?

I'm disagreeing with PCF's position while acknowledging that's their decision to make...and hoping someone unrelated to any of this writes them a check to make up the $6,000 in donations they've foregone from the guilty d-bags on Reddit and 4chan.

Money doesn't absolve someone of wrongdoing. It doesn't matter if it's going to charity. They must have a future in Wall Street or politics - doing bad things and then throwing money at a charity to "repent for their sins."
