Scott's brand, Scott Naturals, is the first toilet tissue to get rid of the cardboard roll; in the US alone, each year the cardboard rolls from toilet tissue could fill the Empire State Building -- TWICE.
Added bonus: They are NOT a Koch Industries product.

No doubt there are many faults to find, as is the case with nearly everything, especially large companies, but this tube-free option is good to know about, imho.

(22,757 posts)they may have gotten more green conscience since this report?... recommendation is at least 50% post-consumer
recycled content and no bleach (Scotts Naturals is only 20%)

But it's the tube-free aspect of this product that is new, and moving in the right direction. They've gotten rid of the cardboard tube altogether. First one to do so, from what I've read.

(22,920 posts)Well, to me, just because something is recyclable doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do without it or cut down on its production.

(185 posts)Much harder for cats to unroll, as long as you don't keep a tongue of paper dangling out the back for them to paw at.

Found online that it's all paper. My bad! I still think the way to go for "paper" products is bamboo. Or hemp!

(2,474 posts)...anyone else notice how in recent years, more and more TP brands have increased the diameter of the cardboard tube, while reducing the width of the paper itself? All while American asses (mine included) just keep getting bigger? PS--At least it's not quite as bad here yet as Britain:

(30,884 posts)It's great that they've figured out how to keep 'rolls' without the cardboard tube but I'm really tired of the shrinkage. At this rate I'll soon be able to load two rolls at a time because they're so narrow.

(37,364 posts)The cost is pretty reasonable and you get the additional benefit of using a product that saves trees. I've found that most of the supermarkets on our area will order a product if asked to do so.

(1,367 posts)We heat our house with a woodstove and use the tubes as a "firestarter". We fill the insides with paper shreds and bingo- firestarters.

(22,920 posts)I'm SO gonna use that idea, putting lint inside the tubes I have here, saved for some clever craft or something.

(33,688 posts)It is very strange and not so convenient.
Real TP - the kind on rolls - is so valued there that it is immediately stolen when put out in public restrooms. I am surprised I didn't see some guy with a thousand rolls of US style TP bungeed to a scooter or selling it on the street.

(65,477 posts)For example, some people make the most *elaborate* miniature albums for photos and keepsakes from TP tubes.
Once I saw a reference to "toilet paper albums" somewhere and was so surprised and confused that I googled to find out what that was.
I found innumerable YouTube videos showing how to use the tubes to create these little albums. Now, I am not one to spend time doing such things, but I was fascinated by the intense devotion the creators had to their craft, as well as the fact that many of those artsy-craftsy women (who showed a remarkable degree of creativity and aesthetic sense, not to mention their ability to turn the lowliest of household items into works of domestic art!) had acquired rather large and devoted fan clubs who left comments on their instructional videos.
I spent several fascinating hours one night just watching those videos and reading the comments on them. Now I am worried about those folks. If toilet paper rolls disappear, there will be no more elaborate TP roll mini albums. I am sure these clever women will find other materials to work their magic on, but I can't help but lament the possibility that the toilet paper tube mini album might become extinct.
Check it out:

Oh, and there are other toilet paper tube crafts, as well. Mini albums are just the ones I found most astonishing and intriguing.
Here is a Pinterest page offering 101 things to do with TP tubes:
http://www.pinterest.com/cttdbreeves/101-things-to-do-with-a-toilet-paper-roll/
I am reminded of quilting--of how need + frugality + creativity and aesthetic sense led to the invention of that domestic art form.
OneGrassRoot
(22,920 posts)I think it was your comment: "Now I am worried about those folks. If toilet paper rolls disappear, there will be no more elaborate TP roll mini albums."
But, seriously, like you I greatly admire the ingenuity of crafters and their innovative use of surprising materials.
I'm thinking perhaps the tube need to remain in the marketplace. Clearly, there are a million reasons -- with only a few proclaimed throughout this thread -- why the world (human and pets) would miss the cardboard tubes.
I am now more enlightened about this fact, thanks to DU.
Thanks, tblue37!

(65,477 posts)albums and scrapbooks out of toilet paper rolls. I guess some people have a kind of search template when they view almost anything in the world, automatically spotting possibilities for craft items.
