My guess is Adrian Peterson will continue playing in the NFL

Nike hasn't dumped him. The NFL hasn't suspended him. He's one of the most valuable players in the league. There is apparently a lot more tolerance for child abuse than domestic abuse (though child abuse is domestic abuse). There's wriggle room here for the Vikings and the NFL and the sponsors. There are plenty of people defending him: He didn't mean to hit so hard. He loves his children and that's why he was "disciplining" this child. there is majority support for corporal punishment of children by parents in the country. 85% say they've used it. Fellow players are coming to Peterson's defense.

depressing. I hope I'm wrong.

Child abuse is considered way worse than domestic abuse. Nobody says the child caused it or the child fought too or had it coming.

but as accidentally going too far with discipline.

read some of the tweets from fellow NFL players. What does it say that Nike hasn't booted him? That the NFL hasn't done anything in the face of all those photos and the tweets? And if you go to virtually any site where this is being discussed, from ESPN to Slate, the majority are defending or excusing him.

Rice was immediately suspended by the NFL- initially for 2 games. The NFL has taken NO action against Peterson.

you're right. It will be very interesting to see what action the NFL takes, if any.

But I also think the reason the NFL didn't suspend him is because the Vikings deactivated him. But once this goes further through the legal system, I suspect the NFL will suspend him and he will likely serve some prison time.

Yes he's currently a valuable player, but he plays a position that has a rapid fall off in value both in terms of win percentage and ability level very quickly. A quarterback can play until he's 40, but running backs drop off after 30. If Peterson serves a year or two in prison, he will be on the wrong side of 30, which will drop his value substantially.
