"The absence of violence in relations with children cannot be limited to a self-imposed obligation nor to a personal style of child-rearing practised by certain people. The absence of violence should be a norm respected by the whole of society, not only because even today too many children are the victims of acts of violence, but because children and their integrity as persons should be always and everywhere respected... Respect for children and violence against them can never go together. If one of the characteristics of a society which thinks of itself as civilised is the absence of violence, there can be no justification for violence against children".
Belgian Commission on sexual exploitation of children, 1997

Lots of progress all around it seems.

But the US doesn't lead anymore in areas like that, since it's hard to make a stand with this while bombing the crap out of so many countries.

I think ... math was never my best subject. But I do know about sociology, psychology, education, human development. And I know we can learn to do better.

the republicans do have their narrative straight. They keep folks obedient and compliant (via methods like corporal punishment and adherence to the church) - which in turn makes adults who are less likely to question authority. And more likely to back the MIC's plan. In the end it is all for profit, but they'd deny that up and down. They simply call it the "American Way" or "American Dream". But sadly for many children it's more of a living nightmare.
