at The very beginning, the first 2 people to jump in were women, trying to separate the actors, and so many people sat/stood and watched with frozen faces...

(3,978 posts)an appropriate response based on gender roles.
As children we have been brainwashed to think this way. But not many can break from these gender roles and realize all human beings deserve to be treated with dignity and need our need when they are at their lowest.

(6,398 posts)...divorced when my Mother in Law pulled a knife on my Father in law....but that night, my father in law called my mother in law's brother to calm her down. He showed up, just as she pulled the knife. He told him to leave....and left the children (and one of them who is now my wife)...under her care.
I've spent a fortune on my wife's Psychiatric care....in the end...I'm just thankful she realized she needed help due to the trauma she received. For the most part, she is Okay with all the treatment. But abuse, if it male or female...affects more than just the spouse. Sadly, society mocks and scoffs at the idea a "husband" can be abused. It does happen and I wouldn't be surprised...take that back...I'm confident that it's under reported.... I blame a "male denominated" society for the problem.....because in that society...men can never be abused by women.

(28,979 posts)Clearly, the male was seen as deserving of his fate and his abuse amused people. His symbolic emasculation at the hand of a woman maybe?
I thought it was striking how the women tried to defuse the situation when another woman was attacked. Men seemed not to know what to do with the exception of the one African American guy who joined in and slapped the dude playfully then followed watching the event. Did the men fail to react for fear of further "embarrassing" the guy?
