(6,160 posts)What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

(5,106 posts)I thought of this JFK quote myself after reading O'Donnell's words. It's taken fifty years between these two righteous defenses? How did we liberals (oh, sorry, "progressives" allow it to come to this? Letting mean-spirited and hopelessly reactionary conservatives define us. It probably started with the media being so afraid of the being labeled liberal-leaning, that they bent over backwards to avoid it, with full encouragement by their corporate bosses. Then came the ridiculous false equivalencies: for every vicious remark or action by the right wing, the left was supposedly "just as bad" on the most ridiculous and far-fetched examples.

(5,106 posts)I fully appreciate O'Donnell's major role in the creation of "The West Wing." I just have to wonder: why was this show so successful and popular in this supposed "center-right" country? Could it have something to do with the many people who think they "lean conservative," bur individually really agree more with liberal ideas? Liberals are terribly ineffective at "framing."

(6,160 posts)conservatives have with the help of jerks like Frank Luntz. George Lakoff has been pointing this out for years.
I think this started during the Nixon administration when the right decided to demonize the media and turned their focus, their energy, their money, and their organizational skills towards controlling the message deceptively by using "framing" and buying up media.
Roger Ailes got his start during that time and now he controls Fox News.
And don't forget Spiro Agnew denounced the media. Here are some of his quotes:
"A spirit of national masochism prevails, encouraged by an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals."
"In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. They have formed their own 4H Club the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history."
"Some newspapers are fit only to line the bottom of bird cages."
A real sweetheart, that one. He resigned the Vice Presidency in disgrace and then Nixon resigned the Presidency in disgrace. Somehow, the right has forgotten that moment in their history.
Not long ago I was in a discussion with a know-it-all right winger, who actually knew nothing of course. I asked this question: "Who was the only person to resign the Presidency?" He did not know. I told him it was Nixon. I then asked him which political party Nixon belonged to and he claimed Nixon was a Democrat. Sigh ......

(62,447 posts)when someone asks if I am a 'progressive' it feels like a punch in the stomach.
I tell them "no, I am a liberal and damned proud of it. I will not let some asshole ignorant Republican intimidate me into not using the word liberal."
Thanks for quote, I will be using it.

(39,451 posts)when someone calls me a progressive, as an insult, I just tell them that Hell Yes I am for progress. I want to see the world keep moving forward.
It's not a liberal vs progressive thing. I think it just better describes what is inside of my heart.

(11,197 posts)The Democratic party has moved far to the right of those that championed the likes of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. We have a Democratic President who doesn't hesitate to place these programs on the bargaining table.

(11,012 posts)door today. No Dems or Indies running. I told him that it was unlikely I'd vote for him since he was a Republican before I knew that there was no other choice than Repug. I found him to be diametrically opposed to almost everything I believe, although he wasn't really willing to listen to me. I mentioned the insurance industry and how the profit should be taken out of it, his answer was to walk away after saying "How can you put them out of business." And then saying, "You aren't going to vote for me anyway." As if, because I was not likely to vote for him, he wouldn't be my representative if he were elected.
The problem is, I'll have to choose one of the three Republicans running and (God forbid) he might be the least toxic of the three -- gotta do some research).
Anyway, I've printed out that poster and after laminating it, I'm going to post it on my front door. Maybe it will keep other Republicans from ringing my door bell.

I can go on and on. But I just wanted to say, my opionion, conservatives are the opposite. They are selfish and greedy as hell. Hateful and are bullies. I don't know what GAWD they are worshiping but it's not mine . . . .

(45,984 posts)Just note in the interest of fairness, many Republicans supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Senate minority leader, Everett Dirksen, was very instrumental in getting the bill passed.

Im halfway through Robert CAROs brick-sized biography of Robert MOSES, and like with his LBJ tomes, its incredible that the same old TeaBaggers keep showing up generation after generation, grinding and re-grinding the same tired arguments that have been proved out to be failures and inhumane countless times. Its just that ignorance of history blah blah. That reliving thing.
